Default Wiring Ignition Coil And Ballast Resistor

Hey guys, having a few difficulties with my KE36 pano,

Now its got a stock 3k and all that, now when I got the car the coil had been removed, therefore I have no idea where wires go lol,

I have a 4 Pin relay hooked up, its got earth wire, 12v battery wire, and a wire going to positive side of coil, now the coil is getting really hot when i connect battery (Resistor not working?, and the car just ticks when you go to start it hmm

Any one got any wiring tips?

the positive side of the coil needs and ignition feed only, not a 12 volt feed from the battery.

(the ballast resistor will be a somewhat pathway for the 12 volt ignition to travel through...ie
ignition feed to one side of ballast resistor
wire from opposite end of ballast to positive side of coil.

the negative see bellow - (edited because i am a tool, and wasnt thinkin right) - (to the negative side you will also need to attach a feed to your tacho because otherwise it wont work.

good luck, let us know how it would go.

    Hey dood,

Diagram attached for wiring of points dizzy and coil with ballast resistor.

The Coil - does not go direct to earth. (If you have connected it this way and also connected the Coil+ to Battery, the coil will be constantly drawing current and will overheat and also flatten the battery)

The Coil - should connect to the points in the distributor (the points switch the earth to the coil)

The ballast resistor and coil + is connected as per the diagram. The ballast resistor is used to reduce the voltage at the coil during normal running.

A 12V feed from the starter is connected straight to coil+ to provide full voltage to the coil to assist with starting the engine.

If the car just ticks, it sounds like the battery is flat?

    diagram is good

you can also use the key to go to ballast from IGN, and to bypass the ballast on START

    ie, 2 relays.
first relay goes between IGN from igntion switch and ballast resistor. (relay has 12v from battery and output to the ballast resistor on the power legs, and groudn and feed from IGN switch on the coil legs)

second relay goes fromthe START position of ignition switch (and other side of relay coil is grounded), and has 12V input, and the output from this relay goes to the starter solenoid, and goes to the coil directly...

from starter, wire MUST be from the solenoid input wire, cos the main wire to starter is always live.

I wouldn't join the output of the relay to the starter and the coil as it can cause the starter to keep running when the key is released.
If you car has a bosch starter on it , it may have an extra terminal on the solenoid cap. This terminal will have b+ when the engine is cranking and can be connected to the coil + as a ballast resistor bypass. The other option is a second relay, wired as above, but connected only to the coil +.
