The idle air control valve is the most obvious. Try pulling it off and give it a good clean with carby cleaner, it might help if it's gunked up. Also have you tried pulling error codes from the ECU?
Well my Avalon is playing up lately and appears to be getting worse. The damn thing wont idle when you start it from a cold-start. I have to end up juggling the revs at about 2000 until it warms up, before the damn thing will be able to idle at a reasonable speed.
Now me noing absolutely nothing about 1mz-fe's, i was thinking that perphaps i might be something like an ISC which is on it's way out (used to a common problem on Falcons). Oh yeah its a obsessively maintained car with only 105k on the clock.
Anyone got anyideas of what might be going on?

I had a similar problem with mine. The problem ended up being the ECU. It had stored corrupted mixtures.. (after having a fuel pump/efi fuse go). It wouldnt idle, and i had to juggle the revs. I removed the battery cable, held my foot on the brake pedal to purge the ECU and then reconnected the battery. All was good again
Also, perhaps the cold start injector is not working/working erraticly, since your having to juggle it until it warms up.

ok i might re-set the ECU and work from there
