Hi guys, I'm still doing research for my AE71 project. How much power can a T50 take before you need to upgrade? thanks.

2T-G - Half the valves but twice the fun.
1st gear is easy on the boxes, as if you have enough power it'll spin the wheels.
4th and 5th are where boxes fell the pressure,
and from what I believe, a T50 is good for up to 200 to 250 hp,
but some take more and last, some take less and blow.

Actually you should be talking torque ratings not horsepower ratings...
High revving NA power is much less likely to break gearboxes than turbo grunt.
It all depends on how it is driven......... T50s were never designed to take the kind of power that is available today. Remember it began life as the T40... behind numerous low power engines...
In my opinion a stock T50 can hold up to a stock 4AGE for 100k miles with little or no issues... except abuse(drifting is abuse). Once you go much above stock torque levels you are prone to tear up T50s
The quick and simple fix is running the W5x box with the 4AG - W5 box aftermarket bellhousing. strong... simple... proven.
About 2 years ago I began a quest to get the Aisin Industries AZ6 (Toyo J160) 6 speed into my AE86. I commissioned a Mazda guy (Mazda uses the AZ6 in the RX8 and the Miata) to develop an adapter to mate the AZ6 to a T50 bellhousing.
It still MAY come to fruition... but I had hoped to make it into production... but the costs associated with a production unit are too high at this time...............

yeah its down to how you drive it
iv know ppl who blow t50s on the road
yest i have a mate with a tarmac rally ae86 circa 180hp and he has never ever blown one (also runs TRD LSD) and he is competitive in his class so not a nana.

Hi,
The T50 was the box that was used behind the 2T-G Celica and Corollas. It can run all day behind a 2T-G and 4AGE, and given the occasional hard time, and still handle it. The AE71 is a light car which also helps.
However, I'd be getting the box pulled down and checked, get new bearings etc, before putting it in the car - as these boxes are getting old and best to make sure you got it all nice and sorted before using it.
But, like anything, there is only so much abuse it can take before it breaks. So, if you drive like a retard all the time and give the box merry hell, then don't expect it to last as long as you'd hope.

I blew two on a 4agte around 200hp.
first one 2nd gear jambed onto the input shaft
second 2nd gear missing a few teeth.
Gotta remember unless you get them rebuilt they are second hand and worn already.

Something like 140 ft-lbs is around the danger area for the old T50's I'd guess.

I blew 3 T50's Drifting/Circuit with a 4AGZE. 3 rd gear chewed out every time!
As Bill said torque destroys drivelines, so you can forget any S/C or Turbo setup with a T50 if you plan on any motorsport and want a reliable package.

agro button clutch dont help box life.. a plate clutch is in most cases more likely to slip then a reasonable box breaking.
