My RN85 sticker is fine and says to disconnect the vac first. time, then reconnect.
Hoping someone can help me out here...
I had to repair a BHG on my Hilux and when putting it back together I looked up the workshop manual to see what the timing settings should be.
Although the book is helpful in telling me the setting (5BTDC), it says that you should look for the VECI label/sticker to tell you whether to remove the distributor vacuum hoses before setting the timing. Every sticker under my bonnet is faded and illegible.
Any ideas on whether the hoses should be diconnected to set the timing on this model?
P.S. If anyone needs specific scans from the Haynes manual for a petrol Hilux '79 - '96 just ask...
Cheers

Thanks, mate...
That's the way I did do it, but it still makes a little rattle noise on takeoff which I though was either timing chain or pinging... I guess the noises I'm hearing are all timing chain then... next thing to repair.
Plus rep for you

I should clarify it says to disconnect the vac AND BLOCK the line, then adjust timing and then reconnect. Apologies for leaving that bit out. I advanced mine a few degrees (as I dont carry any super heavy loads) and it drives heaps better. Perhaps I have moved the timing back toward a more optimal setting as the beast has clocked over 200K now, & I assume timing chain and valve timing generlaly would be worn and out a bit... cheers
chances are its the chain guides worn away
one of mine has 420,000 on the original motor and it noisey as hell
Chain guides are still good, saw them while I had the head off, but the chain itself, or the tensioner need some attention obviously...
Is the 22R engine non-interference? i.e. should the timing chain be done sooner rather than later? 320,000k on the clock by the way...
Cheers

its non interferance if it just the timing chain it is possible to cut the chain while on the cam gear and then wind the motor over and wind the new chain on
2JZHilux, good tip on the chain replacement. I'd be looking at pulling the timing cover anyway to replace the guides, tensioner, and seals that are currently leaking anyways - making the alt belt squeal like crazy...
Rolleraction, The dizzy on my Hilux has two vacuum hoses going into it - which one does it say to remove and block? Plus, am I removing the hose from the dizzy and blocking it, or leaving it on the dizzy and removing/blocking it at the other end?![]()
Cheers

Yes I have 2 also. pull both off the dist. I blocked them by sticking a small phillips head driver in each. Make sure they dont foul on the fan or v belts etc when you are using your timing light. Cheers..
Another danger of worn/broken plastic timing chain guides is, that noise you hear....it's the timing chain rubbing/slapping against the inside of the cover. Eventually it will wear through the heater pipe passage and your oil pan will be full of all your coolant.![]()
Be proactive, fix it.
You only need to remove and block off one of the hoses, I can't remember if it is the inner or outer but it is easy to tell as it is the one that has vacuum on it at idle that you need to block, the other one only gets vacuum at higher RPM
