    Default More grunt from 1FZ-FE

Hi all, I recently bought a 1997 FZJ80 Landcruiser petrol/LPG 4.5l 1FZ-FE engine to tow my 2.5t caravan. Well what a disappointment. Gutless doesn't describe it. My problem is I know there must be torque locked in that big engine somewhere, how to release it? Can anyone advise if there are any mods that would help. I have a Unichip duel map piggy back module but it made little difference. Are there aftermarket camshafts that might improve things? I was toying with the idea of the TRD supercharger. Anyone know who might work on these beasties in Perth? My finances are limited so that is really a last option. Any other ideas gratefully accepted.

    Cheers,
    Alan.

Do you know what LPG equipment it has? IMPCO carb or simple mixer, maybe even gas injection etc. An engine bay PIC will reveal all if your not sure what to look for.

Not injection unfortunately. It's a vapor draw like an IMPCO. Was converted in 2003.
Interestingly there is little difference in power on either fuel.

Is that one of the venturi ring types? If so the biggest venturi I have seen in one of those is about 40mm. Very restrictive when running on unleaded.

Yep, it's a ring fitted to the throttle body, a bit smaller ID than the throttle body's ID. Restrictive or not, is there a way to extract a bit more torque? I have read retarding cam timing a degree or two may lower torque curve. Anyone make aftermarket cams for towing duties?

    Cheers,
    Alan.

Ditch the LPG totally . Take that ring off and then test it on petrol .
You need a Impco 425 and L convertor , thats the best you will do other than gas injection.

BTW retarding cam timing generally moves the torque curve up the rev range.

OK maybe wrong way, advancing any help.
Also anyone know who might make aftermarket camshafts for these motors.
I don't want to remove the gas.

    Cheers,
    Alan.

But I don't want to ditch the LPG, Removing the ring is a problem, it's locktighted to the throttle body and the air cleaner hose has been shortened to fit so not an easy thing.
Any idea of cost of Impco 425 and L converter? I thought of going to injection if the gov rebate would apply but as it's already converted I'm not sure. One mob I asked haven't got back to me after 2 weeks. Not a good sign. Any ideas on aftermarket cams for these motors?
    Cheers,
    Alan.

Ive got a 1fz 80 series on lpg and it goes great for what it is. Have you done normal checks, compression, timing, etc?

    leave LPG then

log mannifold + turbo + aftermarket comp = win

tons of guys run lpg and turbs, better atomisation of fuel, better price and its only really like 7% loss of power compared with petrol. just need to keep an eye on flash lube or whatever it is

Compression is fine 150-155, it has a Unichip twin map piggyback setup tuned on the dyno.
Don't get me wrong, it goes OK without the van but with 2500kg on the back ug. Reach a hill and you will be back to 1st before you know it. Even small hills slow it to a crawl. Believe it or not a couple of hills I have had to stop and use LOW RANGE to get up it! Not good. I need more grunt!

    Cheers,
    Alan.

I don't really want to win anything just get up hills. I don't think the wallet will stretch to a hair dryer. I'd like to look into better camshafts first.

If your struggling up hills etc, not much is going to change that unless its expensive unfortunately.

For a cam package, you could almost do a good but budget turbo conversion for the same cost! Since you already have the piggy back ecu you atleast have tuneability.

I can help you out for supplying some Crow Cams, can do a better price then most. PM me if your interested in taking this path.
