these are the two shifters... the celica one is noticibly longer and has a bigger bend.
EDIT: the longer celica shifter does not actually suit the #1 celica gearbox though, because it has a 20mm bush, while the gearbox only has a 16mm hole.
Can someone help me identify which gearboxes I have here?
I've tried sifting through EPC's and websites... but a lot of conflicting info exists.
Gearbox 1 - came from an RA28:
Gearbox 2 - came from behind an 18R fitted to a hilux (unknown origin).
To my knowledge, the standard RA28 W50 has the smooth bellhousing, normal shifter housing and 40mm steel ball diameter on the shifter (like #1 above). But uses a 20mm bush diameter - not 16mm.![]()
The second one has a 'ribbed' bellhousing which looks functionally the same (RA40?), only one sensor on the actually gear housing and has a rear-extension style housing on the shifter, This one uses a 20mm bush and 40mm steel ball on the shifter.

I'm not that knowledgeable with the W-series boxes, but could the Hilux one be a G-series instead of a W?

Well, i'm even less knowledgeble on the G-series, so i cant say for sure... But the housings are near identical to a W50, as are all the bolt holes etc.
So that, and the fact that the hilux was originally column shift with 12R, then was converted to a celica 18R and this gearbox (hole cut in the floor), makes me think that that box was originally fitted to an 18R (ie: a W50 of some sort).
Just don't know what RA40 and corona bellhousings look like, and whether the shifter position is any different to an RA2x.
From what I know G-series are very similar to W-series, same bellhousing pattern for instance, just suited for ute/fourbie. I'm sure someone else on here knows more thoughOriginally Posted by timbosaurus

G-series are pretty much externally identical to W5x series.
I'm not following what the point of this thread is though?

oh, OK... so it could be a G-series then.
Well, I thought the first line of the thread would have been a gimme...Originally Posted by CrUZida

Yeah, but who's to say that the gbox is from that car ?Originally Posted by timbosaurus
The bellhousings could have been changed, the shifter positioner could have been changed, the shifter itself could have been changed.
Hell the W57 that is in my MA70 was originally from a MA61 Celica Supra import, then wen't into my MX73 Cressida, then into my MZ10 Soarer, and finally into the MA70. And the only reason I know its from a Celica Supra is because I removed it from it myself. BUT, who's to say that the previous owner of the car didn't put it in there from say an RA60 Celica. I'll never know, and there is no way of telling.
Gearbox's are like the village sluts of the Toyota world!!
Unless the individual gearbox's have part numbers (which they don't) then you'll never know what car originally they came from.
And by W5x, I mean W55/7/8. The W50 is generally not classed as a W5x

They are all W50 series boxes. The smooth bellhousing were used in the RA28 and RT 104 Ronas even though Ronas ran W40.The Ribbed bellhousing was used in the RA40.The centre mount shift position was only used in the Celica and the rear mounted shift position was used in the RT 104 W40 and I think the later RA40.As to the G series Hilux styled box they do look the same as W50's but some run a shorter extension housing and run a side mounted shifter set up like the early RT 80-81 Coronas.
Hope this may help work things out for you.
Cheers Brett.
Jeez Brett, that's exactly the info i was loking for! You're a champ!!
No worries Timbo. It does help when I was about when most of these cars were either new or only a few years old and having Toyotas from a early age when most of the parts hadn't been changed from a wreck.
Plus I like helping others out when it is appropriate.
Cheers Brett.
