Default FWD (Camry, etc?) V6 into Corolla?

    Hey guys

I'm looking at engine options for the Corolla (AE82). Obviously there are the standard 20v & 4AGZE options, and I know that the 3SGTE is a very painful conversion so I'm not even going there.

Interested to know if there are any other engines worthy of consideration such as some type of FWD V6 from a Camry which I'd assume would be a shorter engine than a 3S.

Also as far as FWD conversions go I'm sure I can fingure out wiring & mounting but I'll admit I'm concerned about what has to be done with driveshafts or anything else like that.

If the 3S is a painful conversion then so would a V6. The problem isn't length, it's overall size and weight, just picture in your head the standard 1.6L 4-cylinder engine getting replaced with a 3.0L V6 in a small FWD engine bay, and you'll see the problem. Or, go look in an SXV10R engine bay and see how much room there is, then go look at a V6 version and see how much of that room disappears. And the Camry has a _much_ bigger engine bay than an AE82.

Would be better than V6, the thing to remember is that the car is around 900kg, so a hi-po 4-cylinder is more than enough. Hell, even a bog-stock 4AGZE is plenty for a road car, 2ZZ would be great for an NA screamer though.

Is the all alloy V6 THAT much heavier than a Cast Iron Block 4A or 7A?
    1mzfe-VVTi would spank an AE82.

the iron block 3vz weighs around the same as a 3sgte, so weight isn't that big an issue, you'd need to check the dimensions out though, especially the width and height

Ok, so I need to spend some time at the wreckers. I tell you what, this would make for one hell of a Corolla:

    Engine Size 3.0 (2995 cc)
    Fuel System MULTI POINT F/INJ
    Cylinders V6
    Driven Wheels FWD
    Standard Transmission 5 SP MANUAL
    Bore and Stroke 87.5x83 mm
    Compression Ratio 10.5:1
    Final Ratio 3.933:1
    Power 141 kw
    Torque 279 Nm
Highway Fuel Consumption 6.6 (in 40% heavier Camry)
City Fuel Consumption 10.5 (in 40% heavier Camry)

Either that... or just how hard is a 3SGTE conversion REALLY?

gotta remember while it is all alloy, theres a quite a bit more of it, and having 6 cylinders theres also the extra weight of the valvetrain, crank, rods pistons etc, plus maybe even larger flywheel/clutch combo? even things like the weight of each manifold are things to think about. might seem small just thinking about it, but once added up its considerable, specially considering its FF

trans will be larger also which adds a fair whack of weight, specially if its auto might be tricky with driveshafts between rolla and camry cos id guess at shafts/splines being larger to accommodate the increased torque out of the 6. might well be as simple as swapping hubs though, it is with some nissans. theres also issue of keeping the local road authority happy, in vic they've got rules to do with chassis weight vs capacity, and capacity/cylinder increase limits - not sure about other states though. something to check

physically it might be alright, v6's are shorter and FWD enginebays are typically very wide, but in some they're also very short from front to back. so you might have to look into whether it'll fit alright and clear firewall/rad support. remember you'd want a little room so you can fit your hands in there to work on it too. fouling the brake booster is a problem too for some FWD nissans and v6 conversions so something to look at also?

just thinking about it (ie not having done it, or actually gone and sussed it) it sounds quite a tricky conversion given you're not too keen on something like a 3S conversion, i reckon a v6 will stretch your patience/commitment. a good 4A (20V/turbo/charged/whatev) will tear it up in an 82 and it'll be easy assssss id say thats the go!

Camry V6s use E-series gearboxes don't they? So it'd be similar to a 3SGTE or 4AGZE gearbox then, so less likely to have troubles.

yes they do. personally i'm with gary here, if you want something powerful without too much headache, get a 4agze or 4agte

edit; the 3VZ will bolt to S-series boxes as well, fibrewizard has done it that way in his V6 ST184 conversion

And if you can track down a diesel AE82 they had S-series boxes from factory.

Might as well get some rocking-horse crap whilst you're at it too.
