Hi,
Here's some diagrams of the T40, T50, W40, W50 and P51 gearboxes that adorned the Celicas and other Toyotas of the 1970s. Sorry if the pics are big, but I wanted them clear so you can see them properly.

brilliant riv, rep +
so the only difference between a P51 and a W50 is the gear ratio's?
beer me!
Hi,
The ratios can be the same on the P51 and the W50 boxes. The P51 is a Porsche patented gearbox that uses C-bands instead of synchros. It was fitted to the early Toyota GT and GTV 18R-G powered vehicles, but in the late 70's (maybe when the RA40 came out, but I'll have to check that) the P51 was phased out and all GT/GTV 18R-G powered vehicles used the W50 gearbox.
The Porsches of the early 70s used C-bands, but were replaced by synchros by the mid 70s.
I'm not sure why the W50 and the P51 were used at the same time, except perhaps the P51 was regarded as being a stronger gearbox. Maybe by the late 70's Toyota decided the 18R-GU and 18R-GUE power output was within W50 limits... or maybe they strengthened the W50.. or maybe they thought it was pointless to have two 5-speed boxes when one box (with different ratios) would cover their range of vehicles. That's my nice way of saying "I dunno".

do you reckon this was because of price to produce, maintainability, or reliabilty?
where did you find this info? this is great.
beer me!
Hi,
I got stacks of Celica catalogs and factory manuals with exploded views of gearboxes, diffs, engines, full exterior/interior etc.. etc... even the various pin-striping and emblems and badges.
It's just a slow process to get them into a format where I can put them up here for you guys and gals to enjoy.
And it brings me joy that you all seem to appreciate it and that keeps me going. Also, maybe it can help someone keep their old classic on the road, which is indeed a good thing.![]()

River,
I love the work that you have done here, this thread will get you about 2million rep.
Do you have any such info for the W55,57,58 gearboxes?

Hi,
I'll have a look, but most of my information relates to the 1st gen Celica stuff. I'll have a squizz through my stuff and see what I can find.Originally Posted by YelloRolla

I also got the internal diagrams of the actual gearboxes, rather than just the cases. Anyone interested in seeing the guts of these things?

why does the input spline in on the W50/40 diagram look so out of proportion
it appears to be sticking out further than the bellhousing.
