Is there fuel in the carby? The fuel filter may not always be completely full when running dood.
Does the carby have a anti-dieseling solenoid? (Sounds like the exact symptons when my solenoid wiring came off).
Need some aadvice if anyone has experience with 12R engines. I was driving my little RT40 Rona, and went aroudn a few round abouts and she started to stall like it would if it was out of fuel. I kept driving as when i was on straight road it was ok and assumed my gauge was dicky and i needed fuel. Next thing i stop at a traffic light and she stalls, engine turned off and i couldnt restart it. I got a friend to brign a jerry can and i tiped some petrol in the carby and after a bit of trying got it going again, but as i was trying to keep the throttle contant it dropped revs and almost stalled so i had to keep reeving it all the way home wheni stopped at traffic lights to make sure it didnt stall. Any ideas people? Im thinking fuel pump? If so does anyone kwno what these are worth for a 12R engine? Is the little fuel fuel filter supposed to be chock a block full of fuel when the enginens running as when it is there is only a bit of fuel visable in the bottom of it.

If its not a cut off solenoid, next thing to check would be fuel filter.
If thats ok, pull the top 1/2 off the carb and check the bowl for debris, make sure the jets are not clogged and the float is ok.
If your not familiar with carbs (which it sounds like you are not), might be a good idea to have a mechanic check these things.

Only familiar with holdens ! Toyotas new to me !, nope theres no electrical components attached to carb, i might buy some carby cleaner and give that a whirl............ although when we did start the car (had been sittin at my nans for a few years) we did run carby cleaner through it.
