to a 4a bell housing, youd have to use a 4a rwd one =) e.g. AE71 carina boxes, AE86 RWD boxes, or W5X's supra variants, but then you need adapters etc.. im sure the t18 with 4agze has been done, google it maestro and see, plenty of room i guess..
I have a client wanting to do a 4AGZE conversion to his T18 corola. First of all can it be done?
Im guessing it can as im doing a 1UZ into a Holden one tone ute.
But he is worried about gearboxes and such. What rear wheel drive gear box will fit?
Has anyone done this if so where do i look.
Cheers guys

Use a AE71 xmember and KE70 steering column.. Rack n pinion and the engine will bolt in!
The AE71 xmember bolts straight in.. easy as pie.
Be aware that SOME steering box 70 series Corolla's have a different firewall to the rack versions so compare them before you start swapping bits.

yeah i noticed it was a little different than i expected when doing ae86 crossmember + rack with ke70 steering column to a te71 (Basically a T18).
i had to make little plates to alter the bolt up position at the steering wheel end of the column.
it lowered the steering wheel about an inch. everything else went in no dramas.
4agze bolts in with a 4a spec T50 so u cant use the 3T spec T50 already in it. depending on what type of 3T box you have u may have to get a new tailshaft front half aswell. when i did mine the 2T box already had the same splines as the 4a box so it was all good.
good luck with it

Don't need to mess about with the steering if you don't want, as the 4a will go straight in with either AE86 or AE71 engine mounts.
Gearbox wise, as the other guys have said, pull the bellhousing and box out of an AE71. If you can get hold of an ae71 may as well just swap over everything aye.
Steering column wise, it is easy to pull the lower half of the column off of either ke70 or ae71 and adapt it into the T18 shaft.
I'm half way through doing this myself so will let you know how it goes.

I guess another option would be to just get a KE70 crossmember and just mod one of the two mounts. Might be the only choice considering the rarity of ae71 gear
Would it be simpler to leave everything as it sits, use a 4A T50, bolt the motor to the gearbox, grind the old mounts off the factory X member, and weld up new mounts? Or will the be interference problems with the sump etc.
On that topic, from memory there's a few things that need to be done to convert the GZE to RWD, like water lines, T50 flywheel and clutch (rather than the 224mm one for the E series box).
For that matter, for the use that the car will probably get, a W5x conversion is probably necessary, which would need:
Modified tailshaft (I think)
Possibly some drive tunnel massaging?
Conversion plate, clutch, flywheel etc
Engine mounts/4A x member
Convert engine to RWD
Intake and intercooler plumbing
Exhaust plumbing
Uprated brakes
Uprated suspension
Etc

Don't need to touch the engine crossmember. The A engine will bolt straight to it...
Gearbox wise the T50 will handle it to a point. If he's looking to turbo it and wind up boost then definitely go a W series.
If it looks like he won't be getting past the 300hp mark, don't worry about it. The T50 will be fine.
Suspension and braking wise, its all swappable with AE86 gear, but to avoid Takumi tax, just work out what specs you need and tell them its for a KE70 or AE71.
In my T18 I've got RA65 coilovers modded to suit. That gives a good selection of cheapish slotted and cross drilled rotors.
Rear brakes is different. If you're chasing more than 300hp look at an F series disk rear...

I would have thought the T50 box would survive to 300hp if you were nice to it, but I'm assuming that the car is going to cop a fair bit of abuse...Mind you, if you use it until it breaks, you haven't lost anything.
The standard engine is a 3T, are you saying that the 4A will bolt onto the same mounts?

Exactly right... Toyota were lazy bastards... The 3T and 4A share the same crossmember, just different engine mounts. Again, you'll need AE71 engine mounts to do the job nice and easy. The gearbox mounts line up in exactly the same spot too...
I've currently got 4 T18's, one of which i bought as a shell that had a 4AGE in it with T50 box. It all lines up and bolts in really really nicely. Exaclty the same as it would if you were putting it into an AE71, only it's not rack and pinion, though there weren't any clearance issues. Not sure if there's different sump arrangements for the 4A though...
Some suggest that cutting the rack and pinion mounts off a KE70 crossmember is an easy way to do the rack conversion too.
I've heard say that the T50 will handle up to 350 with a bit of pampering, others say it'll only take 250... It's all up to the skill of the driver i'd suggest.
I'd be really interested to have a look at what you're doing with this project.

I have to disagree regarding engine mounts.. I converted a T18 from 3T to 4A and there was no hope of the engine mounts on the xmember lining up with the 4a ones.. Maybe differences between years? who knows.. But in my case we had to change the xmember to a AE71 one.

When I put a 4AGZE in my TA22, we used the stock 4AGE engine mounts and cut and shut the factory TA22 engine crossmember mounts.

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.
