Default Help with 1JZ Harmonic Balancer bolt removal

    Hey Guys,

I am working through the guide by Barned01 here, and cant get my fricken balancer bolt undone.
Obviously this is bad for many reasons, more so cause ive already drained the coolant, etc, and need to get this out.

The engine is a 1JZ in an auto mx83 Cressida, with AC, so there isnt a huge amount of room in front of the engine.
My rattle gun doesnt fit, and I dont think it has the power to undo it anyway.
I have tried the method suggested by Barned01, and had no luck with it.

Is there any other ways I can get this undone?

    Thanks,

    Herus

    1. take off the inspection plate for the auto and get an assistant to jam a big screwdriver in the ring gear on the flywheel to stop it turning
    2. get a bigger breaker bar, or put a bit of pipe over yours to give you more leverage
    3. go for gold

It will either crack the bolt or break the tools, anything in between and you aren't trying hard enough . If you do break tools you could try a powerbar - do a search for more info on it. Clint (CLG) had a thread not long ago on this same topic, will be plenty of info in there

pull off the rubber access hole in the gearbox (to get access to the converter) and use a long socket to go over the torque converter bolts, the socket will jam up on the side of the casing when you crack the crank bolt and prevent the engine from turning over.

so you just put the socket over the bolt and it will stay on by itself. and prevent the torque converter from spinning because the socket wont fit inside the converter housing so it hits the outer case and jams it up.

there is a lot more meat to take the load than the screwdriver in the flywheel trick (which is fine to do if you dont have the box installed)

    Hi,

I edited the title to specify the engine.

Please, please can you put relevant engine or chassis etc information, as required, in your titles for the tech section. It makes it easier to find what you are looking for and helps with searches.

Dale, I wasnt really keen on the diea of the old screwdriver trick, heard about people bending their flexplate trying it. If its a last resort, then I will try it.
I had a look at power bars last night, looks like they might be expensive, but I will see what I can find around.

PJ, I might give that a go now.

    Thanks for the ideas guys.

    Thanks for the edit River.

PJ, my socket wouldnt sit on the torque convertor bolts, it kept falling off when I turned it, even when it was hard against the side. It just pushes it on the right angle that it falls off.
Im guessing you are talking about the spot that you can see looking towards the back of the car from the start of the gearbox?

I got mine with a cheap rattle gun, but if worst comes to worst just do what all my mates do and get a breaker bar and rest it against something with some strenght and quikly turn the key to crack the bolt. bit of a dodgy description because i have never done it but i know alot that do

alot of people say the following method is bad and i admit it is at the very leaset, very agricultural.
    but,
put a tommy bar with a long pole on the nut, leave pole and inch or so from the ground, crank engine.
    that should get it.
tightening it up is fun too i used an old spark plug with a rod welded into it to sop the piston from going past TDC (i measured it so it was just before TDC) in retrospect, its a dangerous move as seriious piston damage is possible

When i did the head on my mz21, i took out the starter motor and jammed the ring gear that way. I then got a fence post about 2 meters long as an extension to my breaker bar and the extra leverage gained by the huge pole undid it quick smart with my full weight.

Well after a shit day of trying everything we could think of, other then undoing the starter, because I dont like the idea of putting that much pressure on the ringgear, we have nearly stripped the head of the bolt, and really havent achieved much.
Anyone available to come over to help? or any other ideas?

    Stitt,
I was trying things that didnt involve stopping the engine from spinning, like using the starter to crack the bolt.
I then tried a Power Bar, which is supposed to shock the bolt, and nothing is supposed to be required to stop the engine from spinning.
I think what I was doing, combined with shit sockets has caused most of my problems, but even when we got the thing to a point where it wasnt turning, we still couldnt get the bolt undone.
I tried removing the starter, but couldnt get the second bolt off due to lack of room, even after lowering the trans a bit.
At this stage, my remaining options are to remove the AC radiator, and get a rattlegun in there, or remove the engine, and do it that way.
At this stage, I am looking at removing the engine, and fitting my 3" dump pipes while Im at it.

Of course, if there is any other ideas, please let me know.
