having troubles already with a project of a mates..
initial word was 'yeh mate i can do that'
but now that the TG gemini is purchased, and 1JZ wanting to be placed in it's firewall, the mod plate guys are umming and ahh-ring about actually engineering it,
from thier calculations the max boosted engine that can go into it (factoring it's 950kg GVM apparantly, though i'm not sure where they get the figure from) is a mere 2300cc.. give or take..
what i want to know is where everyone is getting thier RA23/28's plated with 1JZ's in them!!??
just want to make sure of this before we actually start the process of the conversion, but all the necessary items will be address such as brakes, drive line etc..

is that for qld?
My corona weighed 1050kg and was mod plated for a 1j but this was about 5 years ago so rules may have changed.
apparantly it is, i just copied it from another forum.. yeh i did a search on here and found that yellow animal of yours!!
i might have to sift through the PDF's on QT website..
An Approved Person (Engineer) should have a copy of the Code of Practice to refer to.
AE90 Silvertop - GONE; 2001 ST215W GT-T Manual - SOLD; EP82 Starlet GT - Sold
Now driving 20V Turbo 1.8 N-S FWD
i do not know if that is actually from QLD though.
apparantly all the info is in the 'code of practice - light vehicle modifications' book.. which you can buy for $95.08 from here..
https://www.bookshop.qld.gov.au/Prod...&Product=M7585
this PDF of the modification guidelines is only usefull for wheels, and bonnet scoops..
http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/reso..._vehicles2.pdf
and this just tells you what they look for.. not how to work it out..(

does anyone have a copy of the code of practice by any chance!?
I would have thought moving the firewall that you refer to would throw up a few issues, as the motor is now sitting closer to the driver than it was originally intended to be ...
never has been a problem before, done heaps of conversions moving the firewall.. as long as it's done properly it's fine.. he does them so they don't even look like they have been moved..
Hi mate, I have had dealings with the local mod plate bloke with regard to a couple engine conversions and as he is not actually an engineer he has to stick to there code of practice.
He wont let me do any structural mods with suspention or firewall mods as these have to go through an engineer who has to actually make an application to QLD transport with details and drawings to get approval for the mods before he will give the go ahead.
The code of practice just gives the mod plate guy gide lines for simple mods such as engine swaps diff swaps and gearbox swaps where there is no structural change.he can also approve a full cage as long as it does not have side intusion bars.Maybe this is what is scaring him off.
Cheers, Al.
my mate is a cert 3 (or was it 4) engineer, but doesn't do mod plates..
it's just that the guys that do mod plates have now said that they will not plate the conversion..
himself being a certified engineer can and will do all the things required, but can't sign off and plate it himself.. he is not worried at all about diff conversions, brakes, actually getting the engine in there mounts, cross members etc etc as i said that he does this every day.. just that there was some confusion to the maximum allowable displacement of a boosted engine with a GVM of XXX
it's ok though, everything is sorted, the law as it sits currently is the GVM x 2.51 = the maximum allowed engine (boosted) to convert into a car between 800-1100kg..
the new guidlines are in a bill that is being ammended and will reflect a GVM x 2.75 = the maximum allowed engine (boosted) to convert into a car between 800-1100kg.. this will start being rolled out by June 2010..
this was direct from the horses mouth from the DOT..
Matty: where are you in Briabane? Wilbo found a helpful and friendly mod-plate engineer in Fairfield.
Firewall mods do make it a lot more difficult/complex.
