    Default Surge Tank

Hey all , do you need to run a surge tank for a standard 4AGE that i'm putting in my KE25 or will just a elec. fuel pump do the trick?
    thanks , Lindsay

depends what way you want to go. basically you have 2 choices

    1) run a external lift pump from the tank into a surge tank then an EFI pump to the motor
    2) run an intank efi pump

the tank will stop fuel surge, but is a more expensive option.
to stop fuel surge in the intank setup, baffles must be welded into the tank (but you wont get surge unless the tank is less than about 1/4 full)

    hope this helps

You wont get any really constructive info untill you establish what you intend to use your car for. If you are going to use the car for racing, track, or even a hard driven road car then a surge tank is a good idea. If it is a daily driver and you want to watch your fuel tank levels then you could do without.

Depending on what type of elec fuel pump you use, you might save a bit of cash by using a surge tank as some common ones (bosch 040 etc) use fuel to lubricate them and if they suck air they will die a short death.

Im sure if you clear up what your application your car is set up for, you will get some good advice.

Yes, you really should run a surge tank. They arnt overly expensive, and offer a good level of insurance for the engine. Fuel surge is a nasty nasty bugger, and leaning your engine out during a hills run isnt good.

A small sump attached to the bottom of your tank will be just as effective as a surge tank for a car with a vertical tank like the KE25, also only needs one fuel pump.

    i put a walbro intank into a KE20 fuel tank , into a KE15...

the KE20 tank already has one big baffle you can see by the spot welds. it's abotu 1/2rd across on the opposite side to the original pickup and goes to the top and bottom of the tank. (you can see the dimples on the pic below)

i welded a ring to the centre of the flat bit at the top of the tank and made a hanger to sit the pump right at the bottom of the tank. i would suggest if you keep 5L in there, it will not surge under normal street use.

its the best way, but you dont NEED one if you dont let the car get too low on fuel, in our ae71 we only run an external pump (VL) for the 4age and it see's drift days at the track with no problems, however this is an extreme budget car and with the price of surge tanks these days you may as well run one for the cost of an extra lift pump and some hose.

i got hold of a couple of walbro external pumps from a mate who used to work at a auto parts warehouse , he's still got a couple if anyone is interested ? let me know and i'll see how much he wants for them
so it's not a matter of spending heaps on a surge tank and pumps just didn't want to spend unecessary money (on a very tight budget) , i saw on tweakit.com they got simple surge tanks for $99 , i think i'll go for one of them
