    Default 1JZ-GTE/R154 Clutch issues

    Hokay, here goes..

I've got a JZX100 Chaser with a VVTi 1JZ in it, and currently using an OS GIKEN twin plate clutch (TS 2CD to be exact) holding back a moderate 380rwhp (Nfi on torque, wasn't on the dyno sheet).. It's awesome and I'm pretty much used to driving it around as a daily, but as of the last few days, it's started to slip when I've been driving for a while (hour or so ++), which makes for sad panda

It appears that it's time for a new clutch!

Now, as I understand it, those things come with their own flywheel and so on, with a push/pull converter and the works (explains why they're so pricey). Also, as I've come to realise, they really really don't like to be slipped, and considering that my parking spot at my the apartment where I live is up a hill, narrow as hell and dodgy to get into at the best of times, I do have to slip the clutch a bit when going into my parking spot so as I can get in without hitting anything (I think I have like.. 7 - 10 cm clearance either side of the mirrors if I'm dead on in the bay).

My question is.. Should I just get a rebuild kit for the clutch I have from otomoto and just live with the fact that I will have to replace these things more frequently because of the slipping and general destruction of stuff.. Or should I remove all the twin plate guff and get a heavy duty single and miss all the fun that comes with having a nice twin plate (get some really weird looks at lights from the rattle, and some questions as to "WTF is wrong with your car dude?!?!?!")

If I replace it, what's a good clutch to get, and I'm assuming that I'd need to get a stock flywheel to match up with this new clutch??

    I think that covers it..?

exedy hyper single, i got one ( cusco hyper single, same thing ) for around $1100 from perfect run when i changed my clutch ( also from a twin plate (hks) ) i currently have 380rwhp as well, and i love the clutch.

this clutch comes with flywheel assembly as well, and is the exact reason why i got it.

u will need to buy a new, hub thingy that goes in the pressure plate, as the twin plates usually use a shorter one ( not sure on push pull converter, as my hks retained the pull style )

allthough now i am considering going back to twin plate, as my power levels have changed, and i fear iam reaching the max power of this clutch.

    so yea, tough decision

ive been guaranteed by my clutch builder that my clutch will handle over 400rwhp when i get tot hat power.
its been in my car for 8000kms with about 260rwhp and i love it, and i clutch kick the crap out of it and the way it grabs is awesome.
its a exedy ceramic clutch 5 puck and my clutch builder drilled out the brass buttons and put in carbonic buttons.
IM using a chrome moly flywheel and a heavy duty pressure plate that he built for me.
next thing i started braking was the hub that goes through the pressure plate, they are a shit casting and the lip just keeps breaking off where the circlip goes on.
So i got one machined up out of high tensile steel down at my local engineering shop, no problems now!
I think i have an awesome set up and it reasonabley easy to drive!

Have you got some pics of this, before & after?
    Thanks.

so obviously the shiny one is the new high tensile one.
the cast one kept snapping that lip off at the top that holds the circlip on.
I did a couple of these and got sick of pulling the box out and replacing them so got the high tensile steel one made.

Sounds like an idea.. It's not too bad for driving though yeah?

With the hub, you mean the input shaft on the gearbox would have to be replaced, or something else?

As it stands at the moment, I'm looking for slightly more for the rebuild of the twin plate, but with it all balanced out, it's all about roughly the same cost.

Curious as to what other setups other people on here have though..

I run an OS Gilken, have done for like 18months, and i ride it a bit with no issues. Car made 300hp from day one, then made 360hp not long after that, now makes 430hp...

And i hardly baby mine around...

I'd say rebuild it, thats what my plan is...

otherwise look at Jim berry clutches. They are single plate, and build really well, nice tod rive and all.. But there are cars running them with +800hp...

    Cheers,
