    Default 22R Engine Clicking Noise

Hey guys.. My 1992 Toyota Hilux is making a clicking noise...

    The Engine is a 22R...

If anyone can help me out, as to what could be causing this, it would be much appreciated...

I have a Youtube video below that i recorded of the engine and noise:

    Hi,

And the clicking gets faster as the engine revs faster?

Sounds like a noisy valve, that needs some adjusting.

Be careful with this next instruction... I don't want you getting hurt.. get a big flat-blade screwdriver, the biggest you got. Then place the handle to your ear and put the blade end against the engine, along the top of the rocker cover, while the engine is idling. The sound will transmit to your ear and when you are over the culprit who is making the niose then you got it. Move the blade around the place, but beware of rotating parts.

This is a useful old trick to help find nioses, including bearings, tappets, etc.

1st thing to do is remove rocker cover and check/adjust valve clearance,
whilst there have a look at timing chain guides, toyota stuffed up big time with this motor fitting plastic guides that go brittle and snap off.

once the chain stretches it can strike the side of the timing cover and make this noise. this will usually only happen when cold as the tensioner extends with oil pressure.

good luck, hopefully a valve set should sort it

Is there any tutorials on the internet for adjusting the valves on a 22R... I have a fair idea on what to do and i have a few workshop manuals but real pictures with more detailed instructions would help out alot...

    Thanks Again

    Hi,

I think I have a 22R engine manual around the place. However, until I find it....

Here is the procedure, with pics....

Here is something that shows how to work on your engine. It's long but could be good for later on. I am sure in there somewhere is the valve adjustment.

Yes very common for having this noise. And it is the valves that need to be adjusted. Just so you know, I've done mine many a time and it doesn't get much better....

Dude do yourself a favour and loosen the rocker cover nuts especially the back two while it running and see if it goes away.
    I bet it does.
If you tighten the nuts too tight the rockers hit on the top of the cover and make that racket.

Dear 2jzhilux - that's very very interesting. A great piece of knowledge to know. One wonders how a manufacturer could make a design mistake like that.

Dear Junkie. If you do everything and the noise is still there, it could be a worn rocker bushing or a worn rocker shaft. If it is, it could be expensive as I've had this happen on another brand of car.

The rocker cover on the 22R is very shallow and barely covers the cams, and sometimes they brush against the cover, causing this noise. Loosening the cover can lift it slightly to stop this, but don't loosen it so much that it permits oil to seep out from the seal. Sometimes, when the engine warms up, the rocker cover must expand slightly and the noise stops.

Maybe you could fit two gaskets to increase the clearance providing they are the flat and more solid type.

    Hi,

A sound suggestion, assuming that is the reason for the noise.

They only make the noise when they are overtightened anyway.
