Default Hilux RN85R vs RN90R pay load / GVMs

    Hi all,

Been a while since I've posted on here

Anyway.. .I'm curious, why does the XtraCab Hilux (RN90R) have a GVM of 680kg less than the RN85 Single Cab (and Dual Cab for that matter).

I'm not too bothered by it, as I've only carted a tonne in it a couple of times (which it did no worries)... but in hindsight, its a bit of an eye opener that the payload in the Xtra cab is only 760kg max. At first I thought it was because its harder to get the load over the rear tyres... but the dual cab is worse, and it still has the full payload of the single cab.

It makes the xtra cab the obvious choice for mini-truckers, as each tyre only has to be load rating at 93 compared to 104/106. Makes the new Qld 110% rule on using passenger tyres on a commerical vehicle easy to meet, as there are heaps of 16"/17" tyres that are technically legal on the Xtra, but illegal on the single/dual cabs.

    Cheers
    Paul.

    EDIT: Fixed some wrong figures.

Very interesting!! will be watching this space, i have an RN90 with a 1uz init and never gave it any thought, i had to go to falcon stocko rims in 15inch to clear the BArotor skyline caliper brake conversion, thinkin that it should look stock to keep the police and scaleys at bay, they were also cheap as.

    Hi again,

    Here is some clarification.

The RN90 is indeed very different to the RN85 in regards to load ratings.

    Here is the VIN Plate:

You can see the GVM is only 2050kg.

Here is the tyre placard, unfortunately its a little worn over the "93 S" for the load rating, but the 650kg is clearly visable, which is equal to "93". This is the key difference, the RN90 is not supplied with LT tyres from the factory, they are simply 195SR14 radials. (80% aspect ratio).

So basically, any tyre within the usual diameter and width restrictions, and load rated to 93 or more is legal. For those of us that just want a stock look with better (safer) grip and braking, then a set of BA/BF/FG Falcon 16" steelies with the standard 215/60/16 95H tyres is a perfect fit and undefectable.

As above this does not apply to the single or dual cab models, which very curiously in the case of the dual, are GVM rated to 2730kg and require the proper light commerical load rated tyre of 104/106... which you cannot satisfy with a passenger car radial and maintain a close overall diameter.

Makes the RN90 the obvious choice for the mini-trucker. Sorry if this information is old news to some, but I certainly didn't find any info on the web in my searches.

Note that the RZN154R (2WD extra cab in the next generation Hilux with the 3RZ) has the full load rating, same as single and dual cabs.
