Default 98 hilux 4bie - which motor and box for it?

Hey all, i have just bought a 98 model hilux fourbie, now the diesel in it isnt running right - i have a feeling it has glazed bores from idling around a farm paddock all of its (log book proven) 105000km...which lets face it is sfa for a diesel. It uses 1L of oil in 600km...
now i need a reliable combo as its my weekend work vehicle. Its not a suped up hotrod, but a bit of torque/ power for offroading/ towing wouldnt go astray. It is a G52 manual
diffs are a07's - i presume this would be about 4.3?
Now options are in my opinion:

Diesel rebuild - i think this would be easy but a lot of $
1uz - i have one done 65k....good but would need to get a clutch kit/ bellhousing - cost??
7mgte - i have one mated to a w58 (would the bellhousing fit a g52??) in good nic - cheap
    1jzgte
    2jzge.

Now with either the 1uz (its a later model with ecu control of motor/ box in one) or the 1jz/2jz would i have to use an aftermarket computer?

What do you guys think - 7mgte would be the cheapest for me as i have the gear, but i dont know if you can put 7mgte and reliable in one sentence? And they love petrol.

    Open to suggestions
    cheers

From my understanding, its going to need to be a 1998 or later motor which rules out a few of your list, and makes the remaining ones more expensive (JZ/UZ were the VVTi models by then).

Would be awesome with a late model 1UZ though... worth the expense

pretty sure i could get it engineered hey...i dont think the motor age is a problem...ill check with my engineer n see wat he thinks

Yeah the only reason I'm saying that, is that I'm looking for future swaps for my RN90 (1997 model), and the engineer I use (building a Westfield Clubman at the moment) is quite adamant about it.

Maybe some others will sign off on it, but I guess in the end its the QT that you have to convince?

A set of rings and bearings, plus a gasket kit... Versus.... a complicated engine swap?

The 5L engine freshen up, wouldn't cover the cost of the engineers bill, let alone the other costs involved .. fuel system, exhaust, mounts, bellhousing/ clutch, wiring/ ECU... etc..

Yeah i agree with wa5 it's going to be cheaper and hell of alot easier to rebiuld your engine thats in the car now then having to muck around with a conversion.

Plus for reliability reasons once you've built the diesel and you look after it it will last forever, whereas with conversions there will always be a few kinks to iron out here and there.

Don't get me wrong i'd LOVE to see a 1uz or a 1j/2j (not so much the 7m unless your going to biuld it to) put into it but if your looking the cheapest and easiest way out of it jst biuld the original

If your old go the 5L way , they are a good motor but they are so slow on the hills. Have to admit that a Holden V6 from a VT would be the go price wise . If it were me id put a 1GR from a new hilux in there.

yeah i would have to turbo the 5l if i rebuilt it. id dearly love a 1gr but the price of them is just too high.

does anyone know if a g52 will accept a w58 bellhousing?

what has caused the 5l to die is culpious amounts of red dust - the air cleaner element weighed about 2kg (seriously) when i bough the truck..so its likely the bores are worn as hell and hence im getting such massive amounts of blowby.

im honestly lost as to what i should do...i realise for reliability the 5l is the far superior...but...going on the beach/ offroad they are just too slow!

I'm assuming its the 3L NA diesel?
how bout rebuild the diesel and chuck a turbo kit on it?
just try to avoid rebuilding the fuel pump, thats where the cost will skyrocket!

blake: 105000km is barely run in. I'd seriously consider checking the motor (even considering a pull-down) as repairs may be cheaper than a motor transplant. Even if the head or rings are stuffed, these oil-burners are much hardier than a petrol things and will need a lot of abuse+neglect to damage the really expensive things (like the crank, pistons, liners, etc).

idling around a paddock is not going to glaze the bores of a diesel ... and diesel doesn't wash the bores like a petrol motor. Is the oil being burnt or simply lost thru leakage?

To get in engineering in Qld, the motor will have to be '98 or more recent. No exclusions on that at all.

edit: you'll have get a 1KZ-TE (which is a mighty grunty motor and ideal for 4WD and towing) or a 3RZ (and pay the price/cost of turbo-ing it) or a petrol v8 from a post-'98 cruiser which is going to cost you many barrows of australian pesos.

The 5LTE (3 litre turbo diesel with electrically-controlled fuel pump) is pre-95 so if you'd have to either not engineer it, or get dodgy paperwork.

oil is being burnt charles. it is getting massive blowby so it is either worn bores/ stuffed rings.
