    Default 3S-GTE Oil Cooler Relocation

    Mod on,

    Help...Advice required.

I want to replace my JDM 89 GT4 3S-GTE oil cooler.
The old one was overheated and appears to have sprung a leak is that common?

I am having trouble finding one and was thinking about an aftermarket air-to-oil.

Does everyone still use there water-to-oil or aftermarket air-to-oil or both?

Is there a 3S-something bracket or adaptor to replace the water-to-oil and std bracket?

    Cheers

    Where did it leak?
You sure its not the HFH leaking?

AFAIK not many people remove the factory cooler.
Using an aftermarket oil filter relocation kit + air cooler is common though.

Removing the factory cooler would require machining up of an adapter plate.
I cant remember having seen one anywhere, but it wouldnt be too difficult to design & make.

Not too sure what a HFH is?

I can blow on one end of the cooler water inlet/outlet with the other end blocked and feel it depressurise. A couple of times I heard it make bubbles in the remaining oil, i think?

It is putting a small amount of water into the catch can 10-20ml every 100kms.

I have replaced the hg with an acl pro-seal, the head has been checked and the turbo.
All fine??? Hope its not the block, which has been taken out 20 thou in bore.

Toyota don't make coolers for it anymore only the SXV10 for the 92-97 Camry 5SFE...

And so everyone else has no problems with theirs and most likely uses it and the aftermarket air-to-air?

    What to do???

well if you need another factory oilcooler i have plenty spare.

but the other option is get an oil filter relocation kit and plumb a oilcooler in line with that. it's best to get one with a thermostat as well.

terryo@road and track will have everything you need, but they don't sell cheap ebay kits. so don't be thinking you'll get a kit for $200.

Awesome. Can I get one of your standards (just to get me going). Then i'll look at the aftermarket. Is road n track in Melbourne or online?

    I'm such a newbie...

    Thanks heaps!

    HFH = Hose From Hell.
Well, actually there are 3 of them on the 3SGTE.
Two of them go to the oil cooler.

What are you leaking, oil or coolant?

Oh right, yeah I replaced both the HFH's that go to the oil cooler.

It's blowing a small amount of water/coolant out the cam cover pipe to the catch can not much though...
    10-20ml/100km.

    you sure it's coolant?

road and track's in QLD, they're on the net also.

i'll send you a cooler for the cost of postage. if it's under 500g it'll only be $8 in an xpress bag

Thanks so much... let me know how to get my address and money too you.

As for the coolant, i'm not sure on any of this.

It had a completely blocked oil cooler and now just steams a small amount of water vapour from the big pipe that comes out of the cam cover....

Have you ever considered that it may be normal??

Condensation does build up in the crank case, which does turn into steam when the car is ran.
Oil coming out of there is completely normal too. Its blow-by gasses with some oil caught in it.

we just run a normal generic - 10 oil cooler plate to a remote filter, and air- oil cooler... speed flow fittings are your friend plus the look horn..

no thermostat, none of the stock oil warmer etc, just straight onto the block.. only running a 10 (or 11) row oil cooler one of those ones from just jap with dash 10 fittings.. has been fine for the past 3 years of thrashing

FWIW anything that fits a 4AGE will be perfect for the 3S

also the condensation... as MWP said, pretty normal... the breather hoses on my mates 3S to the catch can would have a fair bit of condensation in there after a few months of running

    Thanks Matty,
    Any photos of the setup?
    What's a dash 10 fitting?
I'm having trouble picturing how it fits straight to the block. Does it have some fitting that goes into the thread in the block?
    Awesome advice.....re: 4AGE. I should have known. I had a Silver top 20V in a 1990 Corolla Wagon.
