$700 for a bare 3L, or $1100 for a 2j (complete) with a remote shift W58.......... So here we go, I've done a 1uz in a Hiace, a 1uz in a 4x4 IFS Hilux, so this should work.........
Step 1: Removed the original gearbox (R150F) and installed a G52 from a hilux, fitted with the JZ-W5x bellhousing, release bearing and fork
Step 2: Placed aluminuim part of the sump from my "dummy" 1JZ to see if the engine will fit over the front diff without doing a body lift, but already knew the answer as I had to lift the cab on my hilux when i did the 1UZ conversion
Step 3: Removed the front diff housing and chopped off the mounts from the chassis. Yes, 2WD 2j Surf, so what, there is method behind this madness. I don't go offroad, well, not far enough to need 4WD, besides, IFS isn't ideal, it has road tyres anyway, isn't lifted at all, and if it was, i could leave it 4WD....

Subscribed, sounds like it'll be pretty fun when it's done

A rear sump 1jz or 2jz will fit with body lift a mates doing this at the moment. Some modification would be required to the steel section of the sump and pickup.
let me know if you want a rear sump
1JZ front sump fits into my IFS Hilux ok no body lift moved the steering damper downwards to clear front sump. If you are taking out the front diff I would suggest rear sump
Jealousy is a curse
Cool, Got a few followers, Should be exciting.
So, I've fitted my bare 1jz, with a rearsump, I have no desire to do a body lift, and don't have the budget to buy a frontsump, so I have removed the front diff, and trimmed down the mounts. Now I'm modifying some engine mounts before fitting my 2JZ. I'll be selling the front diff and also making a set of engine mounts if anyone's interested in ordering a set....
Anyway, here's a few photos of the progress
the 2J is in, tight fit, had to pull the radiator support forward a couple of mm to slide the engine with clutch and all ancilleries fitted, but it's done, bolted to the box, mounts fitted, battery connected, and cranked it over to hear it whine!!
her's some photo's
the radiator support has enough flex in it to not worry about tilting the engine, as per pics... each to their own... fuel lines, p/s and a bit of wiring is next on the list. Going to use a VL external fuel pump as I did with my 1UZ hilux, and an inline efi filter
Due to the weather here in SEQ, progress has been slow, but, last week I cut and shut the p/s lines, so thats connected up now and working, yesterday I connected a few wires and tested that I have power to the coil, igniter and injectors. Next i installed the fuel line (10mm) and plumbed up the return, fitted an external pump and efi filter, then flushed out the last 3liters of diesel and re filled with petrol. By the end of the day I was itching to hear it run, so I gave the pump some power, cranked it over, and she fired up no problems, all in a days work. (yeah right, more like a month)
Today I'm fabricating up some sort of exhaust, off to the wreckers to look at some radiators(mine leaks and doesn't have a filler neck and cap)
pics of mounts & other fabrication work![]()
conversion is done! had a million dramas along the way, waterpump leaked as soon as it built up pressure, I tried an additive to condition the seal, but that didn't work, so ended up having to replace it, AND THEN, found out theres 4 different waterpumps for a 2jz, so finally fitted up one that fitted, only to find the alternator didn't appreciate being so wet.... now the steering pump screams its head off so i've replaced that too.
conversion is done tho! mod plate, rego, rwc!
ok, bi yearly update......
the 2J surf hasbeen running great. I have installed a 4Runner fuel tank with internal fuel pump. Have also fitted up a quieter exhaust to make driving it a wee bit more relaxing. I had a play around with the tacho and got it working, well kinda, ideally a V6 4Runner cluster would be more reliable as i have 6 cylinders...
I have decided to do a live axle and leaf spring front end over xmas, so I can go play on the beach. making a trip to the wreckers tomorrow
