Are you noticing the front brakes sticking aswell?
It could be your master cylinder not releasing.
Hi Guys, I hope someone can help the rear drum brakes on my hilux tend to stay on after breaking every now and then. I checked and adjusted the drums on the weekend and
to my supprise every thing inside has recently been replaced (I've only had it for 3 weeks).
I adjusted the hand-brake, bled the load proportional valve and the drums spun nice and freely. On the way home after several brake applications they grabbed again and stayed on but by the morning after they were fine again. It seems like tey just refuse to release every now and then. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix it? Please!!!![]()
Thanks for the quick reply Cuzzo,
The fronts are fine, its just the rear dragging its arselike a dog..
Is the car loaded up with a bit of weight?
Some hiluxes(if not all) have weight sensing adjustment on the handbrake. Im not sure if it adjustes off on heavy weight or more on heavy weight.
Check that.
No weight at all, Flat allloy tray (no sides) its a 1990 single cab model and the hand-brake looks
like a basic cable set up.
Had a similar problem with dads hiace van. he replaced all thr rear brakes with new shoes and drums and found the brakes would basically adjust up as you drive along on the self adjusters.
He was told by the man in the know at the brake shop that if you fit and adjust the rear brakes without realsing the handbrake adjustment completely then they will wind up and drag.
Similar setup to thhe Hilux just the shoes and drums are a bit narrower so that might be your problem.
My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.
My dads does this every now and then. Only when cold, and only for a few stops. No matter how hard or soft you go on the brakes they lock up.

i'd be pulling the wheel cylinders appart and checking them.
there's no such thing as a "weight sensing adjustment on the handbrake".
there is a valve which adjust the front front/rear bias based on load. but your problem sounds like seized/jamming wheel cyl.
good luck, let us know what u find.

I assume it is a 2 wheel drive model. Where i used to work we had 2 duel cab 2 wheel drive Hilux utes and they both had problems with the rear brakes from new. Sometimes you only had to touch the brake pedal and one or both the rears would lock up. Other times they would work normally. I took the one i drove to a Toyota dealer five times to get the problem fixed which they did not do because they said they could not find a problem with it. I then took it to a brake specialist twice and they could not fix it. I eventually refused to drive it after the rears locked up causing the ute to spin out and hit an embankment which caused it to flip end over end. The boss had it fixed up and wanted me to drive it again but i refused to drive it and everyone else that drove it said it was a death trap.
I had an argument with our Toyota workshop manager over this ute because he refused to accept that there was a batch of utes that came out from the factory with faulty brakes. They were 2 wheel drive utes with 2.8 litre diesel engines.
Are all your cables in good condition? Sometimes they can look good but not be freely moving inside.
Getting your missus to help bleed the brakes isn't everybody's idea of quality time.
Proportioning valve is fucked. Funnily enough they fuck out after 20 years.
Thanks for all the help guys,
after all that it was the Master Cylinder that F*#ked.
Replaced it and good as new. It pays to shop around tho
Prices in Adelaide ranged from $168 to $270
Again Thanks everyone.![]()
