    Default Superstruts or not ?

I have a 98 ST204R SX-R and I'm looking for some coilovers for it , I have come across references to 'supper struts' and I have no idea what this means .

The struts on mine are 3 nut fastener upper and two nut and bolt fasteners lower, front and rear.

Can anyone fill me in on what I actualy have - 'super' or ???

    Thanks in advance.

No you shouldn't have SuperStruts, they were an option on the JDM ST202/205s (and on AE101/AE111 Corolla Levins too) but weren't on any ADM cars at all.

If the suspension looks like a traditional MacPherson strut, then they're definitely not Super Struts, which are a hybrid between MacPherson struts and multi-link setups

SuperStrut - note the "banana arm", "figure-of-eight" etc which are all not found on a MacPherson strut (or have a markedly different shape/layout)
AE102 - Charlene the Old Faithful, Reborn
JZZ30 - Lexi the Spacecruiser, 1JZGTE>>3SGE. 200rwkw, hunting Skylines and n00bs in SS Commodores
    ST162 - Charlie the non-ghey Celica, 3SGE>>4AGE. GOOOOOOOONE
AE82 - Rosie the Bitsa from Hell, 70.8kw atw. Has been converted into garage space and money at last
KE55 - Billie the Beast, sadly missed

Be thankful you don't have super strut... My Levin cost me $1200 for the 4 linkages and two ball joints required to rebuild the system, trade price sent from Japan. TRD coilovers cost $5700 local trade price and the inserts to rebuild them are $440 a piece.

The super strut does handle a lot better though, and is good for a few seconds lead around the track.

Sheeeeeeeeesh talk about 'not missin you ' it goes along with the $27 bloody oil filters I spose.

This is the link to the coilovers I have been thinking of., full set is just over the price of two rebuild inserts on planet Toyota I have no idea if they are the schnizzle though.

I don't know how good those are, but if you get in contact with bmanon on the twincam forums, he sells some very well priced coilovers that are track proven.
I have ISC coilovers on my other Levin (mcpherson strut) and they seem pretty good.

    Super strut?

The wheel camber remains constant over the entire range of suspension travel, and the pivot point is closer to the centre of the wheel so the wheel doesn't track in such a big arc as the steering is turned.
Also, the whole thing is held together with spherical bearings instead of rubber bushes. I have Cusco camber plates and TRD coilovers in mine, so even my strut tops are spherical bearings, I have no rubber at all in my front suspension.

weird. why wouldnt toyota have just gone with a double wishbone setup? wouldve got more or less the same result without having to design some weird proprietary setup which costs shitloads to service??? unless it was too hard to implement in the chassis as it was already designed for mac strut or something maybe. i dunno enough about suspenshunz

Got it there. The superstrut fits in the same packaging area as a macpherson. Double wisbones are hard to do on a transverse engine, because to get the links long enough takes up a lot of the engine bay, and even if they found the room, the whole front end of the car would need re-designing to get the strength in the right place for the new mounting points.
Ford have done a similar thing to superstrut, but they call it "revo-knuckle". It is in the RS focus, iirc.

ps my ae111 half-cut came with the superstrut front end, and all those forged links weigh a ton. Can't be good for unsprung weight.

ide just like to add to hiros post by saying superstrut wasnt an option on 205's, they all had it, but was an option on:
    ST202 (SS-II and SS-III)
    AE101/AE111
    ZZT231

and it was aus delivered, but only on the 77 ST205 Group A.
