    Cool JZX100 factory HID headlights

    Hey,

I've had a RHS lamp go out on the JZX100, which has the factory JDM HID headlights.
Im pretty sure the lamp is supposed to be an H2, but need to remove it to check the temp. (Edit - OEM is Philips D2R 4300k, NARVA equivalent is 49031 im told)
is there a way of telling visually or with a multimeter if the lamp is still good?

Now this sounds pretty lame but i cant get it out. I've tried to remove the headlamp assembly but i'm pretty sure the indicator corner lens needs to come out first. I cant access the lamp-cover's security-bit screws fully without removing the headlamp assembly.

can anyone give me a step by step guide to removing the headlight/big indicator lens assembly? I just dont want to break anything! I have undone the two visible screws but i just cant work out the last one...

I am also looking for some info in general, is there is an individual ballast pack for each side, and where these are located? Could this have died instead of a lamp?

I am also taking caution to disconnect the battery while working on the headlights, since the JZX100 is the first modern car i've owned am I putting anything at risk(ECU, BCM) by connecting and disconnecting the battery a few times?

sorry for the n00b style question,
    thanks heaps

    Guy

It is more likely the ballast has died rather than the lamp which has no filament to burn out

Thanks for the comment, this is what i've been told by a few, seems more likely...
I want to remove each side ballast if there are two(?), and swap them over to the other side to confirm the ballast is the part which has failed.

But is the ballast built-in to each lamp individually?
or is it remotely positioned somewhere else in the engine bay?

Is there any other component involved which may have failed?

I suspect the ballast may be underneath the headlight. Are all your fuses ok?

ballast is attached to the bottom of the headlight assy.

if its dead, you can easily replace with an aftermarket HID kit.... like what jaycar or ebay has.
    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResu...x=0&SUBMIT.y=0

Usually modern cars have an H7 globe.... jaycar doesnt sell a kit with the H7 globe, but sells the H7 globes separately, and even spare ballasts.

EDIT: im pretty sure i remember the JZX100 to have H1 globes....

I've got a jzx100 and changed my headlights over. You do need to pull the blinker light out first. There is only one screw holding it in and then it slides forward. Be careful though when sliding it forward as its easy to break the plastic locating pins off the back of the blinker.

Once the blinker is removed then there are two nuts behind it to undo and one bolt on the front corner of the light. Undo these and unclip the wiring and tilt the headlight out over the top of the bumper.

Once the headlight is out you'll be able to see the balast underneath. It will look like this

If you want some original balasts I have some for sale. They came with my 100 when it was imported but someone cracked my headlight so I bought 2 secondhand headlights from japan and have the old ones left over.

Oh yeah the bulbs can fail as well. They are easy enough to swap though and I would suggest doing that before anything else. You may even be able to get to the bulbs if you pull the battery out and the airbox on the other side. Handle the bulbs carefully and don't touch the glass.

You may not be able to change the balasts over. If I remember rightly they are specific for left and right. I can't see much else failing other than balasts or bulbs if one headlight is still working. If the fuse blew both headlights should be out I think.

    Hi
Count yourself lucky you have the original HID,s , Most of the JZX100,s i have seen have the H1 normal globe conversion and are crap . Try some of the melb importers as they remove the ballasts and globes when they comply them .

I've had one of mine fail. I just replaced both with 2 new Phillips bulbs. They are D2R bulbs and sit down before you get a quote.

Hey guys thanks heaps for all the responses, been most helpful..
just got back from being away for work and getting this sorted asap.
Fuses are good, will pull headlight out soon as i can,

Is there any way to test or visibly see if a lamp or ballast-unit has failed? Im not too bad with electrics and electronics but without knowing what else is in the ballast unit it would be tricky to know how to test..

*TheWitzl - cheers but im hoping to try and keep to original parts, expensive as all hell as they are..

*Stidnam - thanks for the offer, I'll be very keen to buy the ballasts off you if possible, I'll PM you

*Adash=P - so you had one of the bulbs fail? Yes I know i've had the lamps priced up for genuine part and it was $220 i think per lamp, wow.

Just priced up New ballasts from Toyota here and they want $895 each, wow.

well, replaced the ballast on that side with no better results.
The ballast that was in my car was a 85967-22050(drivers side) and i have ...-22060 on the pass. side.
Now the two i bought from Stidnam are 85967-22020 and ...-22030 . They are the same shape so i fitted the -22020 unit and no results.

On the other hand the two that i bought both buzzed out with a multi-meter and increased resistance like a capacitor charging (on the supply side of the wiring loom only), and my existing ballast did the same thing. Which could possibly suggest mine is still okay?
Or would my 22050 unit not be compatible with an older part(22020)?

Does anyone have the circuit diagram for whats inside these ballasts? just curious. Is it just a large coil and capacitor in parallel? Or is there a chip in there as well?

But this means it must be the lamp, or the ballasts i bought are incorrect for my car?

i will post up pics of removing the headlight cluster for reference, and yes, it was a little fiddly not to snap off the plastic locating pins on the indicator. haha

Just a suggestion mate, try your local autobarn. We have catalogues which can tell you exactly what you need, and are able to get HID kits, ballasts, and globes as well.

The bonus is that it'll be significantly cheaper than genuine, and you can get them to do it for you!

Yeh cheers im going to get a new OEM lamp (phillips D2R) after the long weekend and hopefully that sorts it.
As far as anywhere stocking it, nobody from Toyota to Motor Traders to Autobahn and Cartoys to you name it stocks them.
NOBODY STOCKS D2R lamps in SA.
Toyota keep one in Sydney for $480. phillips D2R.
Autobahn said around $320-350. non stocked. no details on what brand they supply.
Motor Traders was the best at $250+gst for genuine Phillips D2R 4200k. could offer me 4200k, 5000k, and 6000k. non stocked.
Motor Traders also offered me Narva 49031(equivalent) at $266+gst. they usually keep the Narva one in stock in SA, one only.
So as far as Autobahn being significantly cheaper than genuine, right-ho.
And getting them to do it for me? They took 3 saturdays to put my alarm in and get it working right, they forgot to test it before i picked it up each time. pretty lame.

The reason i tried the ballast first was for cost! $50 ballast(2nd hand) versus $280 lamp (new).

Haha maybe you just have a crappy autobarn then

Never heard of Motor Traders but they sound decent, and if they're giving you prices "+ gst" they're probably giving you the cost price for a retailer, which is pretty awesome.

Best of luck with it anyway mate!
