Default AE101 gearbox in to an AE82.

    Hey all,

I've just purchased a 4AGZE out of an AE101, that I want to put in to my AE82 Corolla Seca SX.

I know there is a little modification required to make the gearbox fit, but what about driveshafts, can I use my current driveshafts and brake assembly, or do I need to source the ones out of an AE101?

If I do need to source the ones out of an AE101, what exactly is an AE101?
(Yeah, I realise that's a bit of a noob question, but I've only had a Toyota for 7 days now).

    AE 101 was a 92-98 model Corolla.
I'm pretty sure the AE101 shafts were also not exact length. You might find that the shafts do not sit right in the guards because of where you put the box.
I used the AE101 shafts in a AE93 without any issues, but the box didn't need any mods.
The only thing is that the AE101 shafts will be stronger as they were designed for the supercharge whilst you your AE82 ones will be old and prob not as strong. If your gonna do the transplant i'd rather put in the AE101 ones if i were you it will stop you having to pull out the shafts again to replace them 6 mths down the track.

hey, i put a silver 20v and box from a ae101 into my ae82. there was no probs and the stock shafts went in. the box bolted straight in.

only thing to look for is the inner cv boot was rubbing on the engine block and caused it to crack and spew forth grease into my nice new clean engine bay, and onto the flex pipe, which smoked... alot... not happy. but its all fixed now. i filed down the bit on the block and no probs now.

Well the ae101 4agze has the E58 box, much different in size and weight to the C52 box that 4age ae82's had, as are the driveshafts between the two. So yeh in short you will need the E58 driveshafts. Having said that you may find the passenger side E58 shaft (shorter one) will be about an inch too long to fit in the ae82. Mate had to get a custom made one about an inch shorter...

Andy your driveshafts fitted because the early 20v also came with the C52 box (after that C56), hence why you had no problems.

A ae101 with the 4agze is a jdm corolla. Never released here in aus.

Sorry about the confusion, I just read all the badges on the car, and wrote them down also

Your mate did something VERY strange then..... you shouldnt have to modify the CV shafts at all. In fact i know you dont.

Another thing to note is if your E58 gearbox is the LSD version or not, becuase the lsd and non-lsd CV shafts are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

Well actually.... you can use C52 or even C50 fwd corolla CV shafts in a C56 box - the have the same output splines throughout the whole series (excluding the uber rare LSD versions, i dont know about them)

The only difference with the C56 shafts is that they are equal length from inner joint to outer joint. The drivers side shaft is SOLID from the output on the g'box to the timing cover end of the engine, where it is mounted to the block with a bearing, and then has the inner CV joint.
MUUUCH better than having one 3 foot long CV shaft and another 1 foot long one.... and reduces torque steer too.

Correct... well it's a Corolla Levin GTZ or Trueno Levin GTZ, iirc, depending on the front end style (popup headlights for the trueno - and NO, they will not fit ANY aussie corolla)

    Driveshaft question answered above.
You can use the AE82 hub assembly, that's no problems there... but i would seriously recommend a brake upgrade. AE93 sx and GTi (Series 2) corollas have a pretty good front brake setup, biggest of the aussie corollas. Bolt on to your AE82 as well. See my brake upgrade thread in the FAQ.
