    Default TA22 KE70 AE71 AE86 Strut Differences

Just trying to work out some possibilities with TA22 brake upgrades and what not. Facts that I'm rather sure on:

    • All of these struts, as well as the RT132/XT130/RA23/RA28 have the same 85mm lower bolt spacing for fitting to the steering knuckles.
    • When using any of these struts, the TA22 strut tops must be retained.
    • TA22 steering knuckles can be retained, as the lower ball joint is the same
    • All of these Toyotas are 4x114.3 PCD

Interested in any other facts people can offer.

I'm having a little difficultly trying to work out why AE86 struts appear to be different to the KE70/AE71's. I assume the caliper bolt spacings are the same?

The caliper mount IS why you are looking for the AE86 strut housing... the AE86 allows the use of vented brakes, the E7 tubes will not bolt up to any known vented brake system (custom I'm sure, but I don't think you are saving $ on suspension to spend it on brakes)

E7 strut towers are 12mm further apart then the towers in the AE86. The cross member locates the lower arm in the same place. This means there is more angle to the AE86 strut tubes then there is with the E7 tubes.

This is how I decided to remedy that problem

Information is POWER... learn the facts!!

one thing worth noting ; when I used the RT132 struts in my TA22 with the LN130 Hilux calipers I had to swap left to right and right to left (so my calipers are up front instead of at the back) due to the caliper fouling on the backside of the steering arm. This would probably have been corrected if I'd have installed the LCA spacers between the bottom of the strut and the LCA. This doesn't seem to happen with the XT130 struts.

I used RA23/28 struts in my KE70 ute simply because they are very easy to make caliper brackets for if you are going for a big brake setup and have a bigger stub than KE70 or AE86 gear.

So my full setup is late KE70 steering arms and lower control arms, RA23 Celica struts, MS65 Crown 5 stud hubs, LS400/Celsior 315 x 28mm discs and alloy 4 pot calipers, a little machining of the hubs, custom caliper brackets and 17x8 41P Blitz 03 wheels with 205/40 tyres. I will be using coilovers and shortened strut tubes so spring seat and length are no issue.
