Bolt on rear discs for a ta22? is this possible? I need a rear disc conversion done for engineering![]()

From Stepho's FAQ on classic Celicas:
4. What brakes can I put on it?
20/21/22 Celica quite different to 23/24/28/29/35 Celica
- early models have shorter struts than later models.
All master cylinders held by 2 bolts interchange (typically T series engines).
All master cylinders held by 4 bolts interchange (typically R series engines).
Bigger size gives firmer pedal.
Smaller size gives softer pedal
- too small may run out of travel before max force is given.
Bigger (or multiple) slave cylinders require bigger master cylinder.
Master cylinder sizes are 13/16", 3/4", 15/16", 1" (rare).
The stock brakes are not too bad.
The 9" rear drums are almost the largest found on passenger cars of the era
- same as on Crowns and Cressidas, Hilux has 10".
When replacing rear drums with discs you should also replace the rear bias valve.
Rear discs can come from the replacing the axle from:
- AE86 (only the weak T series diff)
- MA4# Supra (T series or stronger F series diff but wider track)
All axle replacements require modifiying suspension mounts.
Most models had either 2 or 4 bolts holding master cylinder to the booster.
Replacement must have the same number of bolts.
Both bolt patterns are common to other Japanese brands.
Mitsubishi Starion 2 bolt is good replacement in TA22 (short barrel).
Crown 4 bolt is good replacement for 4 bolt MC.
Hilux 2# rear axle has strong G series diff with 10" drum brakes.
From your other thread you mention a turbo 4AGZE, so i'll assume thats the motor you'll be using, and why your engineer wants the better rear brakes.
Correct me if i'm wrong but wouldn't you just be better upgrading the whole diff to something that has either bigger drums or comes with discs? Especially since you'll probably lunch a few axles with the new motor? Something like the volvo diff conversion would be perfect. R31 is another option if I'm not mistaken.
Anyways, I think Skidds (or skiddz?) was putting discs onto a TA22 T series a little while back, see if you can find that thread as it had some good information.

Sweet will do.. Do you have info on a volvo conversion?
Certainly is possible, done it to three TA22's so far.
Grab the rear brakes from a Corona Avante RT141 or CSX ST141 of the same vintage.
You will need:
Backing plate with brake shoes (internal hand brake), disc and caliper., and flexible lines.
You must also get the axle retaining plate from the Corona, which entails removing the bearing from the axle.
Pull the axles from your "T" series or "F" series, remove the bearings, fit the axle retaining plate you got from the Corona, fit new bearings. bolt up backing plate with brake shoes, fit disc rotor, fit caliper. You will need a new collet fitted to the handbrake cable, to line up with the retaininer on the TA22 chassis. You may require a Corolla front cable from the the handbrake lever. Depending on whether you have a "T" or "F", you will require a new set of flexible brake lines, or change the hard line on the diff/axle housing.
cheers Chuck.
