    Default 1j 264 vs 272 cams

i was just looking at a few peoples dyno results, and i was wondering what peoples experiences with them were? as far as drive ability and power?

considering one of these as a potential upgrade.

What are you aiming for. Personally I love the 72's but it all comes down to what you want

power wise, something around 300, im not really to fused about poor idle.

300 doesnt warrant cams for starters, just the right turbo. Go 272s if you plan on chasing something like 600whp (450rwkw), otherwise most of the good step 1 cams available will really wake the motor up, 272 is unnecessary.

It doesn't warrant cams but its a worthy investment. The right cam for the right turbo. I assume for the 300 mark you are using something like a gt35. The cams with that turbo can add anywhere from 10 to 30rwkw.

sorry to throw a spanner in the works,

i was going to keep my steel wheeled + twin dump setup, i have seen others with over 300rwkw still using the twins.

i added 264/264 cams to my vvti 1j with a gtx3076r and they made the turbo spool much easier and also made cruising much more pleasureable as the car was now happy to put around at lower revs , very happy with them , making 311rwkw atm

Hey mate, you wouldn't have a graph for your said GTX turbo would you? The boys on SAU would go nuts for it.

So far the GTX turbos are meeting the numbers of the old GT series equivalents yet are lacking in response. 311rwkw is GT3076R 56T on 20psi for a factory internal RB25, no cams. I think the GTX will need more boost to shine.

As for the prior posts, stock twins @ 300rwkw is a little out of scope and a 35R doing 300rwkw is just a little shy of what it should do... I would be looking at a 35R for 350+, 300 is GT30 territory.

I would think that the GTX would still have a bit more in it flow wise, where the GT would probably be getting quite close to the edge of the map by 310.

    Indelible:
Dyno would be very interesting - I've been looking into roughly this size turbo if I end up upgrading. Any chance of some details like boost pressure and turbine AR?

As stated the GTX would be able to run more boost, which would obviously push further into the top right of the map. More boost more flow capability from the motor at the given RPM.

As for the housing AR, the GT30 turbine has a fairly good trapping efficiency and should be used with a .82 housing for these motors. I have seen the external gate .63 housings work but only with a good sized gate. Every second RB25 on SAU runs one of these turbos, google is almost directly linked with the site at times.. Why not have a read in the forced section there, you will find the answers you need down to the T. Results show the .82 works best, with internal
    gate .63s being problem ridden.

    Back to topic!

here is latest dyno graph on 20psi .82 a/r turbine housing , on a vvti 1jz , was from a manifold test changing runner sizes to suit the tiny ex ports on the engine

Can 272's be used on stock valvetrain?? Obviously an upgrade would be preferred, but could they be considered a drop in proposition??

They say that you can just change the cams and nothing else with 264's but 272's require upgraded springs and possibly retainers. Ive gone some BC 272's in my build. I am keeping the factory retainers but upgrading the springs.
