I'd suggest a money engine lol, so you can afford to change everything over. Its a huge job fella! Stick with the 3T, avoid engineering issues, just trick it out, they are a great motor!
Hey there guys.
I recently purchased a rundown TA22 that doesn't even turn over
Master plan = replace nearly everything, put a better engine and box in and restore past its former glory.
I have done a fair bit of research on possible engines that are a possibility to use but as I have no experience with these cars or engines I'm looking for some opinions on the best engine to use.
I want around 250rwkw (with the ability to go higher when I can't say no any more)
What engines would you guys advise on using and what are the pros and cons of them. So far I'm choosing one of the following; 1ZZ, 2ZZ, 1UZ, 3T and if it comes to it a SR20. IS there's any other engines that would fit and make the power? And what sort of boxes could bolt up to them?
Cheers, Chris
If it has tits or tires, it will give you and your wallet problems

1ZZ/2ZZ - issues with rwd fitment as apparently no mounting bosses on side of block for engine mounts. Brief discussion here
1UZ - Has been done before but may be issues with registering it legally. It can't be done here in NSW as the engine is too large as biggest NA is about 3L
3T - Direct bolt in and can make a stack of power. Look on youtube for turbo 3tc and see the power that the Puerto Ricans are making from it. Older technology (ie push rod) but parts such as forged pistons and rods still relatively easy to come by from the USA.
SR20 - Fits and works. I know someone who has a SR20 setup for a TA22 that they are looking to sell. This was professionally done & I have seen this setup. PM me if you are interested.
4AGE/4AGTE - Smaller engine & easy to fit. Has more power than stock 2tc/3tc but you'll need to turbo it to get the power you are seeking. Is possible but will not have as much torque as bigger motors. Will have to fight with the sprinter and keto boys for rwd parts though.
3SGE/3SGTE - Great motor but common problems with bellhousing, custom intake manifold, sump mods for rwd etc.
What is your budget and how mechanically capable are you? Do you want a simple bolt in deal or can you go the whole hog and weld and fab up custom parts?

He is running a turbo'ed 3T and that has put out 270rwkw........I'd say go for some similar sort of setup and just try for reliability and driveability....no point having a big HP engine if it's undriveable. Plus the 3T is a good strong, well designed engine and should be a lot simpler to play with.

(now that's my type of racing)
1 or 2jz should be added to your list.....
go the SR20... chicks dig em!
GOT: Suzuki SV650 with lots of mods - Almost stock XC falcon ute with 351 and gas
Building: TA22 with SR20DET
Chicks dig SR20's? Pretty sure if someone doesn't know the difference between a compression ignition engine and a spark ignition engine (apart from using a different fuel pump) then I don't care if they dig my engine or not.
Stidnam. Thanks for your input, it was pretty helpful. I'm a 1st year apprentice doing mechanics but it's in the army so I'm learning diesels and heavy vehicles. Can do a lot of stuff myself and I'm going to use this project as a BIG learning curve. Budget = a happy medium between cheap and overnight race parts from the states. I want the quality and if I need to wait longer to pay for the right parts then I will. What sort of box would be good to bolt to the 3T and cope well? I've already come across a nice final drive set up (I'm hoping). Spent $1500 on eBay and got this custom diff/brake set up![]()
-'98 Hilux Surf diff (open centre but I'll get a LSD one day I hope)
-left axle and housing was shortened to bring the pinion to centre
-2 new hilux axles
-Stud conversion to standard celica pattern which I'm lead to believe is 4 x 114.3?
-All mounts changed to fit a TA22
-Disc conversion including;
i. Nissan Pintara discs
ii. Rebuilt R32 callipers
iii. New pads
iv. New brake lines
Aparently it can take up to 500hp and hasn't been used at all. Still needs to be run in.
With a differnt box and diff I'm thinking I'll need to 'trim' the tailshaft or get a custom built one. Or is there one from a factory set up that might fit?

Silly Rabbit, thanks for that link. It's brilliant.

try following Kedderz build thread. He's ditching his 1ggte for a 3rz (2.7L of ex hilux goodness). http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/for...elica-112.html
In NA form it would be able to be legally engineered in NSW and apparently has massive amounts of torque. Might be easier than a longer engine and shouldn't have the rwd conversion issues of the 1zz/2zz.
But that said, it might be better for you to do what NME308 has done. That thread has already been pointed out
For 250 rwkw your best bet is an SR20 with something like a 2871R. You'd also want some small cams (Poncams maybe) with some rocker stoppers. If you use the factory ECU, you'd also want a Z32 airflow meter. Nissansilvia.com is your one stop shop and source of info for all filth Nissan related.
The gearbox will take it in a light Celica providing you aren't drag racing it on slicks. The diff choice is fine as well.
Good luck, it is great to see people keeping the best looking Celica's alive![]()

The software required Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.

If you want a learning curve go the 3sgte. Being in the army you have all the expertise in fabrication plus the tools they need available for a carton.
