    Default Turboing a 22re engine.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but i wanted to know the pro's and con's of turboing one of these engines. I know they're not the most desirable engine to turbo, but i only want a little extra zip untill i can afford an engine conversion. Basically i just want to know how much boost i'm limited to, what computer is in it and if it's tuneable etc. I've done a search but i couldn't find much on adding a turbo to a standard engine. Cheers fellas.

Lots of parts available for these in the states, very popular over there as the engine was in the tacoma for a good many years, there was even afactory turbo version.

Stock ecu will chuck a tantrum with boost pressure, will ping its tits off and the head on these dont flow very well at all.

These engine love the boost but you need to forget anything you find on the net cuz you just going to find things you dont want to hear like it is not a good idea the engine wil not rev it wont past 300 hp without blow to pieces and shit like that exactly the same mistery as how to presurized webber side draft to run in boosted enviroment,

With the right cam and turbo setup you can make a stock 22re go to 300 hp easy and with a complete built engine 500 hp are a easy task but you need to do the right stuff and is going with a custom grind cam and stand alone ecu with many other stuff,

I always laughed at the ones who tell me it is imposible and love prooving them wrong.

The cost involved for a " little extra zip" to turbo a 22re successfully would be similar to the engine upgrade your planning .

This suggests you REALLY don't want to modify the 22r-e. It's a truck motor which can be made to go (US boys have had a LOT of success and experience in this field), but you're looking at a pretty substantial outlay for a stop-gap measure until you do a conversion. I'd suggest just deal with current power and fast-track your conversion

Yeah fair enough. How far off would a set of extractors from a 22r equipped 2wd hilux go from fitting in my corona?

I bet with extractors it can be done but may need adjustments to clear various things in engine bay and piping to match up to rest of exhaust

I read into this a long time ago when owning a 22re and belive it can be done on the cheap if you are doing things yourself and running it real low like 6psi . I think you can run some whack stuff like retarding the timing a lot etc to compensate
Google "22RTE" there should be many sites or forums for Hiluxs.
I also remember seeing turbo suited pistons for sale from America for like 200$ from a ebay seller/shop. Stuff exists to get you on your way

If youre doing it yourself though, i reckon you'll spend minimum 1k on bits n pieces without engine management factored
You can find engine conversoin in total probably for not much more thn that and itll be a bit more reliable too.

do it + 2 or 2.5 inch system, makes a huge difference. also back the spring in the air flow meter off a notch or 2.
apparently rj70 toyota bundera extractors are a good fit, and i just happen to have a brand new set laying around that i dont need.......
