Default AWD E15XF Transmission to FWD Conversion - Help needed

    Hello everyone,

I'm in the process of swapping the 3SGE in my ST162 to a 3SGTE from an ST185 and I need help with the possibility of converting the AWD transmission from the ST185 into a FWD trans for use in the ST162. I have removed the engine and transmission from the ST185 front cut and I am now trying to determine if it is possible to convert this transmission. The front cut I have is from a 1993 Group A/Rallye St185 so I believe that would make the gearbox an E151F or an E152F. If anyone could provide some information as to weather this conversion is possible and what will be required to make it possible I would greatly appreciate it.

    Cheers,

    Tony.

    yes it's possible..

you need to find the 'end plate' from a 2wd box.. most likley to find is from a v6 Camry... but you can use a E51 or E58...

this plate basically replaces the intermediate axle and centre diff housing...

you will see what i mean but when you look at a 2wd box compared to the 4wd box, it really does look like they made the box always for AWD, and then thought... you know if we blanked off this part, and put an axle straight out of here we can use it as a 2WD box...

matty are you sure it's that simple? i pulled the transfer case of my gt4 box once for the same reason, but it still had another shaft coming out from the diff which could not be removed to simply replace it with an mr2 shaft?

also i'm sure i asked somene about this and the answer was you needed to disassemble the box.

so yes it can be done, but the hassle involved it's easier to find either a V6 camry box, or if you want one wit LSD, some of the mr2 E boxes had fractory LSD's. then swap over the shifter linkages from the gt4 box.

Aerrow. which front cut did you get? a group A with WTA, or a Rallye? rallye are super rare with short ratio gearbox. grpA have a long ratio box whilst the mr2/camry/all other gt4's E15 boxes have ratio's in between the 2.

Hey guys thanks for the replys,
Pretty sure is a group A front cut with WTA. trans axle code on the plate says its and E151F. I was considering the MR2 box but I thought I would look into converting the one that I have rather than sourcing another box. I don't know if I'm being naive here but looking at the design of the box I thought it was possible to simply remove the transfer to the rear and close it over. Any thoughts?

Yes, you can't just remove the transfer case.
The bell housings are different between the FWD & AWD boxes.
So, by the time you source a FWD E series bellhousing (which probably means buying a complete box), you're better off selling the AWD box & buying at the minimum a FWD box from the late 90's Camry (with the 1MZ-FE alloy V6).

I'm not sure if the 1st 'wide body" V6 Camry had the E series or S series box.

Ok then, looks like the best solution is just to get an E153 box and sell my E151F.
Anyone know the approximate value of an E151F Box with driveshafts?

You might want to be keeping the shafts. As the Camry is wider, those shafts will probably be too long.
Passenger side should go straight in. But when you get the 2WD box, get the matching straight shaft & support bearing that hangs off the engine. Your other shaft should (be if, you'll have to confirm this yourself) then fit that if you dismantle the inner CV.

Pulling apart my E151F box and I ran into a snag removing the 5th driven gear (Image bellow) off of the output shaft to get the bell housing off. Any suggestions of what tool/method I should use to get it off?
