Here is a video of my gearbox solenoid reader program.
It's hooked up to the A650E trans in my GS300 and it samples all 7 solenoids at 4kHz and displays the PWM solenoids on the charts and the 4 on/off shift solenoids as the LEDs on the screen. Have a look at the attached video by clicking on the link below. Best viewed in full screen mode.
You can clearly see the duty cycle changing during shifting.

so, you're planning to build one from scratch? i.e. not to map the collected data to some settings of a generic ECU like Megashift etc?

I had a look at Megashift last night and it looks as though it could be made to work. I'm not sure if it could do the sequencing of the accumulator solenoids etc that the A650E does. I'm just collecting this data now but depending on the gear shift the ECU operates the accumulator solenoid in very different ways. For example shifting from 1 to 2 it operates before the shift and shifting from 2 to 3 it operates after the shift. Some log charts will follow later today.

A couple of notes on the factory GS300 A650E controller.
Looks like the accumulator solenoid is the most complicated one and it will take a bit longer to figure out that one. The line pressure solenoid duty cycle goes down with increasing throttle opening in a fairly linear way. It starts off at about 50% duty cycle and goes down to about 15% at WOT.
The GS300 uses the so called flex lock up where the lock up torque converter partially engages under certain conditions to reduce torque converter slip and improve fuel economy. I think I will just operate that one in a more conventional fashion where it looks up or disengages only.
Another note; The flex lock up is featured on the Tourer V Auto's and not not the lower model Chasers I believe... (If it isnt that specific flex lock up it does have a lock up specific feature to it that other models dont, paired on the 1jz-gte)

Here is some data recorded during a relatively gentle acceleration through all 5 gears.
First one is the accumulator solenoid that you can see activating in some cases before gear changes and in other cases after gear changes.
Second shows the relatively simple operation of the line pressure solenoid

I wonder if i could plug a scan tool into a GS430 to scope the trans signals .
Yes the 761 E is a rubber coupling , but may swap to the supra flange .
Its not in a car so i have no idea how the solonoids work . accumulator solonoids would just alter the shift firmness id guess .
Out of the 9 solonoids id guess 5 are for shifting , 2 for accumulators 1 for line pressure and 1 for lock up . thats just a guess .
I will be getting the hydraulic chart on it soon and then the pcs controller.

I didn't use a scan tool I just scoped the pins on the back of the ECU.
The ECU is very conveniently placed in the engine bay and once the cover is off the connectors face up.
I then just probed the back using some el cheapo needles from the $2 shop. They actually came with gold plated eyes so I could solder them to a piece of ribbon cable.
My A/D converter is 8 channel and there are about 12 pins of interest so it will take a while to build up a full database of info.
Might have to check and see if I can run two A/Ds at once as I have another at work.
7 solneoids, TPS, two speed sensors, and AFM perhaps.
If you can loan me a GS430 for a week or two I could do the same with that.
BTW I did find an A761E manual online that described the functions of all 9 solenoids. I have found the most informative document of all is the Toyota new car features that describes the new transmission when they first come out.

Here is some nice data logs at close to WOT from zero to about 110km/h. At this point the car is still only on 3rd Gear. I think to log data up to a higher speed will require a private road. You can work out my 0-100km/h time from this at about 9 secs. Not exactly a drag car but the GS300 is a heavy car for a 2jz-ge to haul around.

Minor update.
Here is a graph of the line pressure solenoid versus the TPS output that goes from about 1 volt to 4 volts from closed to WOT on the GS300. The outputs are on a scale of from 0-1023 or 10bits as I have moved on to programming my transmission controller.
So the line prssure regulator actually relieves pressure with increasing duty cycle. At idle or closed throttle the duty cycle is about 50%, and from about 50% to WOT the duty cycle is about 20%.
