any info at all? anyone here put an M engine in a hilux? (89-97 models)
cheers
hi i have an RN85 single cab 2wd and the poor old 22r is just not cutting it any more so i have decided to lay it to rest and go something a little more potent.
i had a few ideas but settled on a 7mgte, as toyota engine in toyota car just suits. and i happen to have one in my shed.
now for the questions.
the 22r is a rear sump, so is a 7mgte, will the sump clear? i have read that people have used 5mge rear sumps?
to mount the engine, i have been told the 22r mounts are good, but to use "supra engine brackets" so do i use 5m or 7m brackets? as i have had mixed answers.
with the correct combo of engine mounts and brackets and using a "M" bell housing from a manual N/A supra, will it align to the stock transmission? (will put my w58 in after i demolish the g52 haha)
will the w58 use the same trans mount and tail shaft?(gearbox is ex MA70)
will the clutch fork and slave from the "R" bell housing work in the "M" bell housing?
and one last thing to do with the mechanical side of things, there are feed and return fuel lines, would they be suitable or too small?
any help would be greatly appreciated as it makes it so much easier if i can just "go shopping" for the right parts and not screw around and waste time and money.
electrical is not an issue, 7mgte's are relatively primitive so they are simple to wire up.
oh and seeing that the 7mgte has coil packs that means i have to use a tacho booster yeah? i have one from my 1jz cress after i want digital dash.

Not a M engine but i have done 2X JZ motors and most things in the conversion would be pretty similar.
Rear sump would probably be best.
You will need to fab new engine mounts and gearbox mounts to get the motor back far enough to fit.
Clutch line will be need to made if you swap to a w58 box as its on the other side.
Tailshaft should be ok but may need to be shortened slightly.
You will need to make radiator mounts as you will need to get rid of the stock radiator and fan, i used a ma70 radiator.
Will also need to sort out heater hoses.
Then sort the wiring and do some skids.
im liking that. ^
i have done measurements and it seems the 5m supra mounts from the centre of the bolt hole in the engine bracket to the rear of the block is almost exactly the same as the 22r, so that tells me it will drop in.
and as it is the 22r is less than 20mm from the firewall at its closest point, so don't think i could really move it back any more
i have both front and rear sumps, and a modified oil pickup to suit the front sump. clutch line is easy to sort. and i have my old mx83 rad after i went alloy, so that would do the trick as there mounting is almost identical to A70's just slightly wider. power steering needs to be sorted, might re-mount the 22r pump where the a/c compressor goes as i don't have a/c.
so if the trans in in the stock position, do w58's have the same mounting point as a g52?
also what did you do for an intercooler? as things get a little tight even before you move the rad forward.
cheers
