Does the 85 Corona have knock sensors ?
Quick question, wondering if anyone can help.
I've got a 94 22r hilux.
Bought 85 Corona 142 22re EFI gear complete to do conversion. (EFi, AF Meter, EFI setup etc etc)
Except the knock sensor.
Do I need a knock sensor and plug/wire from an 85 or from a 94?
Seems if it has the corresponding plug and wire with it then it might not matter? Just connect it to ground and harness?
Ideas... Cheers!
Does the 85 Corona have knock sensors ?
Knock sensors are more of a later model evolution thing to control maximum ignition timing with computer contolled timing ..
Even though you are going EFI, the EFI is off a 85 model going into a 94 model car, so not to sure on the official legalities of the conversion as conversions are meant to be done with a motor & emission's etc off a same year as the Car or newer / not older as in this case ...

Shit really?!
I'll have to ask my Cousin who's the mechanic doing it then... Keen as to do it, only getting 330 klms a tank out the bastard!
The hole for the knock to screw into is there, but didn't even check the block off the corona till after I got the gear. The guy I bought it off, just spoke to him, said it isn't there and he doesn't remember selling it. Again, I was just reading some forums and they're on the 22re from Overseas...
We'll see I guess...
I have never worked on a 22R motor, so the question is on your motor does the distrubtor have a vacuum advance unit hanging off it ? & does it have mechanical advance weights internally, if so it would not run a knock sensor as its a basic ignition set up Non computer controlled & so there is no way of externally quickly controlling the timing as a knock sensor does, so it would be of no advantage ..
All Toyota knock sensors until early 2000's utilize the same principle of operation, that's why I think any sensor is better than no one.
Firstly I'd check your ECU's p/n and see what knock sensor it's supposed to be run with. Then maybe check sensor's application on earlier models. Toyodiy would be helpful

Engine conversion is when you drive a shitbox which costs a whole LEXUS to own
84 and 85 aus spec 22re,s dont have a knock sensor . 86 and87 unleaded 22 re,s do have a knock sensor . You will have the vacuume advance dizzy which is a good setup but still no more economical than your carby . Fact is 22 R,s all use a lot of fuel unfortunatly.

Shit on my dreams! haha... all i want is to get down the highway at 10/100... is that possible?!?! haha... If I wanted to go 17/100 I'd drop a 1UZFE in it!!!
So just to clarify. You say 84/85 don't have knock, but then newer do.
My 94 22r doesn't have it in the block, so does that mean I need to add one, or is the controlling thing the fact i'm using a 85 efi.
I have found a 91 22re that's been rebuilt and it's going cheap. Should I just do that instead...? Or a 3rze... ?
Just put some extractors on it and that helped so don't really want to use a different engine and have to replace those...
You can't just add a knock sensor, it has to go with the ECU etc that suits the knock sensor, ( so a quick point of reference is look for motors & computer combo's that Dont run vacuum & mechanical advance distributors as they cant run knock sensors )
But as Dave said they all are thirsty, so if its cheap running costs you are after maybe go LPG Gas or try looking for a different motor combo ..
Is your Hilux 2WD or 4WDrive ? if its 4WD you will never really see cheap running costs ..

Yeah it's a 2wd 22r and has the vac advance dizzy.
The 85 corona the efi gear came off doesn't have a knock sensor so I'm guessing it'll be fine.
As you said it should swap over ok, but you need obviously wire up the computer, plus run a EFI pump & suitable EFI fuel hoses & filter etc, to maybe no real gain ??
How savy are you on wiring up the computer & properly wiring the fuel pump etc, if you are just saving the 22R motor due to fitting up the new Exhaust recently you might be in for a shock with the time it takes you with everything else, i assume you have the Complete wiring harness for the EFI that you want to fit from Computer to AFM etc ..
If it was me i would be looking at other options ..
Yeah I've got everything, from start to finish there, and my cousin who is doing it is a great mech, he'll sort it fine i'm sure. I'm just making sure i've got everything there for him to do it...
