    Default Stroking 5MGE.

Used search function couldn't find it, No luck googling either but I'm tired and can't say I tried very hard XD

Anywho, I read somewhere but can't remember what combo of parts to use to stroke a 5MGE... Was it a 7MGE crank with 5MGE pistons and block? O___o
Also, Would standard 5MGE crank bearings work for the 7MGE crank?

    Off to bed now...

Love the way anything published on the Internet becomes a Fact, even when it isn't.....

Short answer - buy a 6MGE and your stroked 5MGE is done for you anyway.

I guess it all depends on the application - 6MGE might be the way to go or just the good old 7MGE...

I understand that a 6MGE is a 5MGE with 7MGE crank so my plans are already done... but the reason I'm doing this to a 5MGE instead is I already have it sitting at a mates house. I'm also looking to do this while I'm freshening up the engine with new rings, bearings etc to get a bit more oomph! So basically what I'm asking is how do I go about stroking a 5MGE using spare 7MGE parts, Is it just the crank or do I need to use the pistons also? And again, Will standard 5MGE crank bearings work or do I need to order custom?

Zahmad - Thanks mate, I have seen that page, Useful information, That site also has one for 2TG and 18RG that I have read. But, It hasn't really answered my questions.

So I need 7MGE crank and rods, Not the pistons themselves. Thanks for that mate, Cleared up a few other questions too! Plus rep

The reason for my response is exactly that, you can not make a stroked 5MGE just out of a 7MGE. I have built one and it isn't as easy as it sounds. Yes 7MGE crank (early one is a 6MGE crank anyway, later 7MGE has double counterweights but is otherwise the same dimensionally). There are 2 different front crank bearing widths in 5MGEs so some fit the later cranks, some don't. There are differences in 5MGE blocks. 5MGE cam pulleys have a different tooth profile from 7MGE (square vs rounded, yes you can get away with it but not ideal for long life) etc etc, and obviously you can't use 7MGE pistons, they have reliefs for 4 valves vs 2. Nor can you use 5MGE pistons as they have the wrong compression height. You can't use your 5MGE harmonic balancer as it is the wrong size for the 7M crank, but your 7M balancer has the wrong belt drive for your 5MGE accessories.

Please have a go as I am the last person to want to stop innovation or trying new things - but just do so knowing that you can't just do it with any 5MGE and a 7MGE, you need the right 5MGE and other bits as well.

Yeah I knew there would be more to it, It's never as simple as bolting things together I did plan on having the block honed and at the same time getting the place (Wherever I get it done) to also check the crank, order in some bearings to suit and if needed, Make it fit! The reason I'm wanting to do this rather then just buying a Turbo engine or engine with more displacement is it's going in an MA45 and is easy to swap over as well as I want to keep it old school; I'm wanting to run triple solex's on it. I chose the 5MGE as it has a Distributor, Making it easy to delete the EFI and just have carbies.

Problem is how much money you are willing to spend...if you're trying to keep it classic, you might as well just drop a stock 5MGE in as it will be plenty for the MA45. If you're spending lots of money, might as well get a 7MGTE to keep it in the same engine family...

5MGE has a distributor, but the Australian delivered ones all got the later spec EFI with ignition advance also computer controlled. If you want to run carbies with it but don't want to go to an ignition only computer or advance system of some sort you will need an early model 5MGE distributor with vacuum advance which you will probably need to source from the US or luck by an imported engine with one.

No, I already have a 5MGE but I want an old school style and sound as well as power, Hence stroke it to 3 litres, Run triple solexs... I don't want the EFI. Kinda going for a dedication the the 2000GT's 2MG.

Look, I know there are cheaper alternatives, I get that... But I want this engine to be a very particular build to suit the look I'm going to go with on the car. It's hard to explain...
Its just like theres a lot of cheaper options then building an 18RGTE but people still do it and you can't talk them out of it

    Anwyay, Thanks everyone.

This is an early 5MGE with a vac advance dizzy though? Are you sure they didn't come in some Australian MA61's? Thats what its out of.

Australian MA61's never came with 5MGE's I believe.... they were all 5ME's?
