    Default 1.5jz information

Hey, I am looking into putting a 1jz (1990 JDM JZA70) head onto my 2jz block (1999 2jz-gte vvti). I'm doing this because I've got a cracked head on the 2jz and I already have the 1jz. i have put a lot of money into the 2jz thus far.

I would like to know you opinions on the matter, what issues i may face with the conversion and any tip and or tricks you might have.

    THanks

if you have lot of money in the 2jz, i am assuming aftermarket turbo, cams etc....

These will not fit the 1j head.
The 1j head is not as good as a 2j head either.

The normal reason for doing a 1.5 is the opposite to what you are doing - someone like myself for example, has just blown the bottom end of my 1j. i have 6 boost manofold and a cutom inlet that wont bolt to a 2j head.

so you throw the 2j block under the 1j to give the capacity increase, without haveing to rebuy all the good bits.

    Cheers

    info relating to 1.5 J

    agreement with Stew Toy77
Japanese apparently used a 2j bottom end with 1j head to use all their special gear tuned and prized collected over time etc etc on their tired 1j,was easier at a time to buy fresh 2j long motor than rebuild the 1j plus gain the extra torque of 2j longer stroke and potentially use same gearbox etc as before.
I went to build a 1.5 long ago when 2j was expensive here and beer budget dudes would use the NA 2j bottom end,1jzgte head etc.

People also turboed the NA 2j motors at the time.turbo manifolds for NA 2js were for sale on ebay.

1.5J-It was required to use the 2j head gasket and have one water gallery machined in the 1j head to match the 2j block. Many did not know of this and misinformation was/is common.

Mention 1.5 j today and most yawn and turn away. The example Stew posted is probably the only good reason to do a 1.5 today.

In relation to 1j bottom end failure-and this is only hearsay-I ran into some guys [sold them a 1j motor] who had a sweet garage at home with hoist, all the tools and 2 immaculate drag cars running 1js.Their recipe was to purchase unopened 1js with around 100,000 kms. fit ACL race bearings and the do the mains up FT with ARP bolts then rev the tits off them with reportedly proven reliability. sounded logical and they had no reason to lie....

ahh rightio. THanks. All im trying to so is save my car from the scrap heap, and this seemed like the easiest and cheapest way to do it. So, ignoring all performance parts, the 1990 1jz head will go onto a 1999 vvti 2jz block without too much trouble?

    in short, it will fit.

you will need to have the oil galery in head welded a re-drilled.

none of the 2jz manifolds will fit

you will need to plug the vvt oil feed

the stock 2jz electrics will not work (cam triggers are different)

1jz electrics will not work (crank trigger wheel has more teeth on a vvti)

standalone is your only option or change the lower cam pulley for the 1jz one, and piggy back the ecu to make up for added displacement.
