The Starlet EP85 and EP95 models came with a 4wd transmission behind their 4EFE motors. A bit hard to find these days
Hi Peeples,
Nice to be here posting for the first time with the toyota revheads.
As the topic says, i need some Toyota geniuses to step in an shed some light on a question i have regarding AWD / 4WD gearboxes for a 5efte build.
The planned shell is a highly modified round nose mini (classic). I have been researching this project for a while & now seem to have a green light on everything, with the exception of one item. Have a guess what it is
Now the 5efte engine build is a planned for 300hp-400hp with a modified/lightened shell. This is where the awd/4wd gearbox comes in handy. I want mini me to grip to the road like glue. I've looked into the gearboxes as much as i can but can't find any definitive answers.
So my question is what gearbox out there can mate directly (or with very minor changes) to a 5efte & handle the planned horsepower?
I've tried looking for the obvious, which is the toyota starlet (ep85/95), but very hard to find, let alone with all the running gear & i'll end up needing an extra one as a spare. If this is my best & only option, then so be it. I will find one eventually
I've read people mentioning ford tx-3 awd, mazda 323 awd, celica gt4 awd & toyota corolla 4wd. Any of these fit? And confirmed tried and tested by someone out there? Are there any others that i don't know about that may work?
Is there another alternative pathway (aftermarket & reasonably priced) ?
I want to avoid any custom bellhousing, they cost to much, take to much work (adjusting) & will never hold to modified factory straight fit box (in my opinion & prior history). As mentioned, the gearbox will be modified to handle the power.
Looking forward to some answers. thanks peeps
Thanks Sh0rtiee

Thanks Kebin. Very hard to find !!! i see you have corolla wagon in your avatar, 4wd?
Hello anyone out there ???
If you thinks this should be posted in another section or another toyota forum, please let me know, as i'm not a pro on forums. Thanks
MY AE95 4WD corollas have E57F5 transmissions. They are plenty strong (same family as GT4 etc)

The gearbox you are chasing is a c150f, found in an 4wd starlet or corsa. Good luck finding one in australia. very rare - period. the box is basically a c50 with a different bellhousing that has provision for the centre differential. Basically a 2/3 scale gt4 box. you cannot retrofit a 4wd centre diff onto a standard starlet box - the front diff is quite different (as is the inner c/v joint)
The box will bolt to any e series block, however you will need the 4wd sump, or to modify your existing sump to clear the center diff housing.
My setup came from a number of sources (Japan & NZ) suggest you look at using the maxda /ford tx3 box as it will be easier to get. E series toyota box (gt4 etc) will be too big

Probably need to start with a e58 out of a 4agze with a late 2az rav4 transfer case. Macpherson strut front suspension with a high mount rack like a camira.
Or watch project binky on youtube for the right way to do it.
Thanks .T. & Xauterus.
I'll keep my eye out and hopefully a setup in the next 10 years pops up. :/
Project Blinky........ that's just insane & expensive. I could only imagine that beast though.... would be fun![]()
