The cheapest replacement racks i've found are at Waitara Pacific Spares. I was looking for a KE70 rack and rang around a few places and their exchange racks were the best priced.
Cheers

Went to bob jane to get a wheel alignment today and they said they couldn't legaly do one unless i get a new steering rack because there was to much play. So i'm wondering where's the easiest place to get a reco steering rack for my RT142 corona in sydney [by easy i mean cheap but ok...] . Can i use one out of a standard aus spec corona ( i dont have power steering ). Or i was considering finding out what other racks i could use to perhaps get a bit more lock as i plan to use the corona on the track in future.
Can anyone give me an estimation of what the costs will be. I'll do all the labour myself.
Cheers,
Mike![]()

Cheers mate. i'll head out there some time this week. What price did they quote you for the KE70.
And does anyone know of another rack with more lock
Mike,
Check that you don't just need the steering box and/or idler arms adjusted, that'll save you a heap of time and money. Had to get the steering in the 55 fixed for it to pass rego, total bill from the mechanic for pink slip, steering fixing, and the re-welding in of one of the front seat bolting-point brackets was $66Originally Posted by chubbylover53
Also, sorry to bring this old thread back up
Is an RA65 2.4L steering rack the same as a corona 2.4L rack. i dont want power steering either
cheers
p.s. best quote i've got so far is $315. is that good for an exchange
I paid $200 exchange for a manual ke70 rack.
He is talking about rack and pinion, not steering boxes, they use a rack and tie ends.Originally Posted by Hiro
It should be the same as RA60's shouldnt it? and the 65 is just an electric vr of that.
Is $315 for a new rack or a recoed one?

My mistake, although the principle is sound - check that you can't fix whats in there already before you go and buy something to replace it that costs more than the repairOriginally Posted by TOSCO
'slop' in the steering rack is caused by worn bushes and balljoints. replacing these items is essentially a 'reco'
hello
you are forgeting the nylon bushes in the rack and the worm gears themselves!Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe
that is what can cause the slop in a rack!
yes indeed.....but what i was trying to point out to 'Hiro' is that changing all the components to eliminate the slop is what they do in shops, and call a 'reco'.
no real easy way out of it
hello
Ignoring the steering box/rack mixup, I was implying that the OP should get the small things checked first like bushes, idler arms (for those cars that have them) rather than just getting a whole new rack etc. Adjusting and replacing small things is a lot cheaper than replacing or recoing the whole lot.Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe
